Co-Payments Go Way Up for Expensive Drugs

Drifa, thank you so much for the eye opening post. I am going to check up on both my family's policy and my parents (my Dad has Lung CA) as they have a federal insurance plan and they don't need a surprise like this right now.

that is so sad, people have to decide between a meal or a pill, there's just no excuse for that, how much does it REALLY take to make these medications??? I believe if they are going to do this, the prescription companies need to be called out as well on their pricing, submit what the cost to make the meds really is, and the government decide the cost of the med from there, I would give a med no more than a 30% profit, thousands a month for a med just makes no sense.

It's not the drug companies raising co-payments, its the insurance companies.

Forgive me, I haven't read the article. But I did need to comment about Insurance Companies. Our old and new insurance company has a $30 copay for non preferred brands. the difference between old and new, old company would not allow generics for nonpreferred, but the new one demands them. For the last three years on my one perscription alone I could've saved $1020. That's a huge chunk of change.

Yup, I mistyped that..it's the insurance companies, not the pharma companies that are driving this.

sweetwinter, I'm sorry to hear about your father's illness. I hope he isn't affected by this co-pay increase.

YES BUT under this new change the patients have to pay a percentage of the normal price of their prescriptions, which sways the responsibility back to the drugmakers to produce these drugs and charge a FAIR and reasonable price!!!! These drugs keep people ALIVE for GOODNESS sakes, the price of them should be only a fraction above what it costs to make and package them!!!! It's not fair for a patient to have to pay a percentage of a jacked up price!

Insurance companies have forgotten why insurance was created in the first place: to spread risk among a population so that the group shares the financial loss. (This definition still means that insurance companies can make a profit and that everyone can benefit from a reasonable insurance cost.)

I agree for the most part, however in playing devil's advocate, companies do have to reimburse their research and development to make the prescriptions. Although on the other hand, it sure makes me mad when the pharma companies allow factories in Mexico or Canada to make the drugs and charge a LOT less money on them in those countries.
