:mmph: ok, was late by 5 days on an online credit card payment. I think (and I am going back in my records to check this) that last time I was late was about a year ago...and I believe it was the only other time with this credit card. I called to try to reverse the finance charge of $25 and the late fee of $39, and they only thing they would do is offer to take off 1/2 of the late fee. I begged...but then got really po'd and said nevermind/thankyou/goodbye. I'm going to call back again, after I get the date of my last late fee (since they for some reason wouldn't tell me when this was). I felt like saying "You know what...I had my wisdom teeth out, then got a hideous infection in my jaw, then ended up in the E.R. and paid the stupid E.R. bill with this credit card. That's why I was late!!! Any tips/past experience/suaveness to pass along so I can call back tomorrow and try to get all fees reversed???

Try calling back and talking to someone else. When I don't have luck talking to the first person - I try calling again because you never get the same person twice.

Just tell them you have never been late before and due to medical reasons you were unable to send the payment any sooner and offer to get a note from your doctor.

If that does not work - ask for their supervisor and start all over with never late, medical problems etc.

This is the exact reason not to use CC's. Our household has converted to using mainly cash for most of our day to day stuff or debit cards for other stuff. I pretty much only use my CC for stuff at work that I expense.

yeah but wait til tomorrow after you have had time to think and dont take on more than 2 in one day...and write a letter and an email...thats alot of freaking money...be as pitiful as you need to be...you could buy all new makeup with all that money!!!don't back down but don't get overly upset either....

oh and ask the "really?" alot when they tell you something that really pisses you off...say "really, that sounds right?" "would you like it if it happened to you?"....make them help you or find someone who can......if you are crappy to them then they feel justified in being mean to you....if you say stuff like....look I am sure you hear this crap all the time but "this" is what happened...I know its not your problem but I can't afford this..." SOMEONE will stop and listen if you make yourself human....

If nothing else SOMEONE is gonna go home hating their job... :)

actually I would call and cuss alot while popping meds and smoking ciggs....but it sounded good didnt it??

I would try what Madonna said. If that doesn't work (and you are willing and able to follow through with this if they say no), I would say "I've been with you since {insert year here} and I had extenuating circumstances for this lateness. If you cannot remove all the fees, I will pay off and close my account with you and get a credit card with a company that appreciates my business".

Best of luck!

I don't like carrying more than $20 around with me...never have. Debit cards it not a bad idea...but we get better rewards with the credit card. Like I said, being late in payment isn't typically a problem with me. It was just the circumstances.

I'll do this. I had thought about threatening to leave them. Of course, if I close my account, it will hurt my credit score, right? I think I've heard you just shred your card, vs. actually closing. But I don't know that will work as a threat. "You betta refund me my money punk...or....or...you hear that whirling sound? That's my card in the shredder....you hear that other whirling sound? That's me hitting forward/reverse/forward/reverse on my cheapo shredder that I bought with this stinkin' credit card." ok, I digress.

If this doesn't work, I'm gonna try psycho's med trick. thanks! :kissing:

If you've been with them a while and have good credit, it should work. FYI cutting up your card "may" be better for your credit score than canceling your card according to this. But if you cut up your card, you may want to pay it off, wait a couple months and then request that they lower your credit limit to $500 or some super low amount to hopefully avoid any other negative credit effect. This should also enable you to get a decent credit limit with the new credit card company, but hopefully it won't come to that.

Just my two nickels.

:thefinger: I had a something like this happen once. I paid online but it was after 4:00 so it wasn't going to post till the next day. WTF!

I immediately called and said that it would not let me pay today and is only showing tomorrow. They said to make the payment, but I would be charged for it being late. They said the best they would do is split the $39 late fee, and I would also be charged a whole month of interest fees.

My being after the 4pm deadline by 15 minutes, cost me over $46.

:motz::rant:

They said they will let it go once, but this was my 2nd time in 10 years and I was SOL! :faint:

Welcome to the world of the new credit card rules.

I just got dinged $39 by my company too. I thought I had a longer grace period than 14 days. It's funny because I called and told them to either remove the ding or I'll close the account...this was about five minutes before I read this thread. She said she put in the request and it should be processed Monday. We'll see...

If you can throw in another $44.40, I'll go ahead and pay my late fees...

bank of america anyone????? just curious.

BOM SUX!! We closed our account after making a 2 cent error and paying over $90 for it in returned check fees, they would only refund the first overdraft charge, and you know how they put largest to smallest which is absolute CRAP, ok I'm not bitter or anything, LOL!! Stay well away from Bank of America!! They will be belly up soon anyway.

Bank of America charged me over $50 just to check my account balance. They did reverse the fees, but I closed my account immediately thereafter and stay away from them.

I like BofA but I pay my balance on time. My credit card is linked to my check account that way they just take the money from one account to keep my balance safe.

ok...anyone like their current company??

American Express blue card.. you don't pay it all off at the end of the month like their other cards.. no yearly fee.
points program, and they will bend over backwards to help their customers.
they also have another card that's similar now.. clear .. main difference is they send GC automatic when you have enough points.

Some companies have the following (unadvertised) policy: they will fully refund the late / overdraft fees, but only 1 time / year. I know B of A and Chase / Washington Mutual do it. When you call Customer Service, they will automatically tell you "no". Immediately ask to speak with their manager, and miraculously your fee reversal will be granted. Large banks do not want the hassle and want to keep you happy and will let it slide, provided you pay your full balance on time every month and only have few of these "glitches". Hope this helps. Good luck, sunny.

BTW, I exclussively use CC and never cash, but my CCs are cash rewards, and I get 5% back on gas, grocery stores and 1% on everything else. I pay my full balance every month on time, but as a reward. I collect about ~$500 / year - it's definitely worth it. I love Chase.
