Link wrong, price too?

Picking Nits: The link to Dell Small Business points to Staples, and you show the price of the server as either $279 or $289.

The 220 coupon doesn't work for me either..... I really wanted this one too. :(

I suppose you could forgoe the 160GB HDD and get it "as-is" for $279 with the 80GB drive. Still not a bad deal.

Toss a bigger drive in later.

First time I clicked on the "discuss this deal" link, my browser downloaded a file called showthread.php

wtf?

showthread, showmessage, replytomessage and others are all functions in the PHP programming language. THese commands are all used in forum software. You were and are using a forum. - Spoofee

My advice is to create a limited user account and use this account for web surfing. Do not surf in your administrator acct. You can't install anything as a limited user so you are very safe from viruses, trojans and hijackers.

I know what php is, just wondering why a navigation link would result in a file being downloaded.

As for viruses, trojans and hijackers (and spyware and adware and etc...) I just use a Mac instead of worrying about switching users and other BS.

i'm not familiar with "Server" PCs... why isn't their a video card included? Servers are just regular desktop PCs that are used for heavy duty uptime... why can't I use this as a desktop pc?

Yes..help..could someone explain real difference between a server and a regular desktop computer ?

Its basically the same thing with out a high end video card. Servers are built for stability, so there is no reason you cant use it as a regular desktop.

So I guess my question is, does it come with a video card? An AGP slot? PCI Express slot? I didn't see mentions of that in the specs.

I have already gotten the SC 400 and SC 420 and they work great as desktops. The SC 420 has PCI express so you can put in any PCI express video card, which seems to be the trend now. AGP slots seem to be getting phased out. The SC 400 and 420 both have a clamshell design for easy access into the computer. Placing PCI cards and harddrives into the computer is a breeze because the slots are designed for server activity so that you can pull things in and out without using a screwdriver. The SC's have a quiet and efficient cooling design. SC 420 also has gigabit ethernet. When you put in your operating system, avoid the Dell disks until after the OS install. Then use the provided disk to install the hardware drivers by going into the Windows Install Hardware Wizard and telling the wizard to search the Dell disk for the drivers. If you are looking for a cheap computer, avoid the 3000, it doesnt have PCI express and IT DOESNT HAVE AGP. It just comes with somewhat-decent on-board graphics, enough to power a 20 inch Dell 2001FP without any slow redraws. It was a bad mistake for me. The SC 420 only comes with PCI express and no AGP slot. It does come with on-board intel graphics chipset, if you want to wait for the PCI express graphics cards to come down in price, but the on-board video is slow and you can see the slow redraws when you open up windows or drag windows around. Oh, another thing with the SC 420, it come in a hard black plastic case that is as hard as the plastic they use to make childrens plastic play ground equipment and "big wheels". Its the type of plastic that can be beat up and will not crack or scratch like the regular desktops Dell sells. The design of the case is pretty mean looking too. My next computers will always be an SC.

eabu You sound like a Dell rep, but I'll take your advice and purchase this thing -- whether you did or didn't post this from your office at Dell :)

Actually Win xP is now essentially virus proof. If people would use the design elements which are built into the OS there really is no reason to become infected.

I'm on my original xP install from when it first came out and have never had any malicious software. (Despite frequenting the "crack" sites looking for goodies - as you know in these places the virii come at you like bullets in Baghdad)

The trouble is that 95% of Win users surf as administrators. Doing so is asking for it. This is the main reason why Linux, BSD, and all the other unices are virus free. (Mac is a unix variant BTW).

I never understood why MS went to the trouble of copying the security structure of Linux without having the default user being limited. It certainly works in Linux.

It just seemd (to me) that a user who has *just* registered and has only *1* post all in the same time frame as this thread populated and well after, my post here is a little odd. I am most certainly grateful for his detailed opnion on this product, in fact, he alone convinced me to shell out $300 with just his words. If that's ungrateful on my part, then I apologize.

Who made you Spoofee to tell me what to do anyway, J?
