I believe they come with 8x PCI-E, thus have problems with PCI-E graphic cards.

Apparently the 420's video connector will take an 8X card (hard to find seemingly). The connector is long enough to take a 16X card, but has a plastic tab/divider in it to prevent that from happening. However, with an x-acto knife, one can cut away the tab and insert a 16X card. Unfortunately, the 16X part of the connector is "dead" (not wired to anything) so the card needs to throttle back to 8X (supposedly they do automatically).

Oh, and don't forget, you need a sound card too.

Rigging a server with a video card and sound card? Sounds like a server isn't what you're looking for...

Dell SC420

Not the greatest deal on these servers either, at this price, the server needs to have the P4 upgrade on the processor. Not really worth the hassle and hard/expensive to turn into a high end desktop, especially at this price.

I will wait till the other deal on this server comes around. The P4 version for 229$.

I think you may be confused

First of all, thanks for the link to the forum, those are always helpful. Second, I think you are missing the point of what a server is. The idea behind a server has nothing to do with video & sound/high-end desktop.

I have many clients/customers/(and unfortunately) relatives that have businesses with between 3-10 employees. This server is ideally suited for them. They need something to STORE files on which can centrally be backed up!!

If you are looking for a powerhouse, the title including the word "Celeron" should be a give away that this will not meet your needs. If you are looking for a low-end machine (with server class components), this is a good starting point.

The Dell SC420 with a P4 processor for less money than it is being sold for on this deal, is a deal Dell offers also. I was just trying to point out this deal is not the best deal Dell has for this machine.
If your in no hurry for a server, waiting can get you a better deal on the same machine.

PS: No Operating System, AGP slot, Modem, Floppy Drive or Sound Card included.
Also the cd-rom is not a normal drive.
48X, Compact Disk Drive, 680M I, Half Height, Black, for PowerEdge SC

EMS monitoring tools for voltages, fan speed, CPU temperature, and ambient temperature are not included, here is Dell's response:

The PowerEdge SC line of servers are an entry-level server; and therefore do not have the Embedded Server Management (ESM) controllers that the standard line of PowerEdge servers have. Therefore, Dell's OpenManage monitoring application does not work on this server.

This would be a decent box for a personal web server or ftp server if you were sharp enough to wipe the Windows OS and install Gentoo.
