DeLonghi PACL90 10K BTU Portable Air Conditioner for $319.98 Shipped After Rebate

This is a great price... If you dont want to deal with the rebate, and you have an 'Ocean State Joblot' near you (new england area only i THINK)... They have the Haier 10k BTU model (portable AC) there for 349.00... we bought it a couple years ago - works nice.. Remote control, etc.

The thing with the portable ac's, is that its not apples for apples when comapring the BTU's with a window unit.. The 10k BTU portable unit does not push out nearly the same amount of cold air as a 10k window unit.. Just what i found in my own research, and experience with them. But they are really handy when you dont have a window to work with! We direct vented thru the wall...

Home Depot also has a 9k BTU portable for $299, and an 8k for ~$239. I think it depends on the store if they're carrying these or not.

Anyone know how these work as far as condensation goes? My townhouse has central air but it frankly sucks. I'm looking to get this for the bedroom but I'm worried about condensation and how the airflow works. All my windows and side sliders instead of the usual up/down action. Thanks!

...Shouldn't you say your central air 'blows'?

Not sure about condensation for these units, but I'd assume if you can't put the vent hose out a window (assuming it doesn't have a 'drip tray' you empty), you'll probably get some nasty stuff floating around your room and/or dripping on your carpet.

they typically are self evaporative.. meaning they evaporate the condensate internally... So there is no need to empty a tray, etc...

We have ours in our living room, which basically has a bay window only... What we did was basically install a dryer vent through the wall. We put a hole through to the outside in the corner of the room (near the floor) that we would be placing the ac unit it... And put one of those self opening dryer vents on the outside... looks good and works great. The units typuically come with a cap to place over the hole, which we do in the winter.

That's what I initially thought too, but I recently bought an 8000 BTU portable AC unit from home depot (~$240?), and it has both the window air exhaust pipe, and a drip tray (or drain tube if you have somewhere to let it flow into). With the horrible heat wave the north east is getting, and the humidity that comes with it, I've had to empty the drip tray (~1 quart capacity? Maybe more) every 6 hours or so.

Also, the window port thing for mine worked both on up/down and sideways sliding windows, but it probably wouldn't work on a window where a crank opens it away from the sill. There was an option to perm. install it into a wall also (like a dryer vent).

That stinks about the drip tray... That can be annoying!

i hear ya on the heat wave.. it's down to about 94 right now, and its 720 pm!
