Detroit buries the n-word.

Can this mean that there will also be no more "Slavery Reparations' claims?

So what are the rappers going to say now?

And besides, what's wrong with the word "numbnuts'?

Why wouldn't it?
I'm not a racisist in any form or fashion, but I thought this was absolutely ridiculous. The fact that they held a ceramony and a real burial in a real coffin shows how seriously they are taking this. Do they (and by "they" I mean the people put this whole thing together) really think by burying a word it's going to stop people from saying it? While Amber and I were out watching fireworks I heard the word more often than I normally would just because it was "buried".
What a waste of taxpayers money.
The concept behind it is great, but why stop at one offensive word?

If we can't accept it we're not going to get a ahead of it. There won't be any progress.

Thats very insensitive to try and bury it. The n-word told me personally that it wanted to be cremated.

 That made me chuckle!

me too! thanks for the laugh! I needed that

But in seriousness, I agree with Butty, its a great concept but don't think getting people to stop using as degrading a word as that is as easy as having a funeral.

I think the concept is good, it is definitely a moral boost - but I agree with Butty - why stop with just one word? Calling women ho's & b!tches.... I find them all equally offensive. And I always thought it was weird that Afri-Ameri's called each other the n-word anyway. It was like accepting where this word came from and why it became. :questionmark:

I totally agree. You don't see people going around calling each other crackers and chinks and gooks. That's just rude.

"Do they (and by "they" I mean the people put this whole thing together) really think by burying a word it's going to stop people from saying it?"

I think they are just trying to set an example for others. It would be unrealistic for them to expect everyone to stop using the n-word just because of this, but they are trying to make a statement and set an example. But they wouldn't be able to expect anyone to stop if they just sat back and didn't say anything. The point of speaking up or holding a march or whatever is to spread your message to whoever is willing to listen, even if it's just one or two people.

"What a waste of taxpayers money."

How exactly is tax money being used here?

If you watch the video, they denounce those other words, too.

"And I always thought it was weird that Afri-Ameri's called each other the n-word anyway."

Again, if you watch the video, they seem to be denouncing anybody using the n-word, regardless of race.

They aren't saying "We don't want white people to call us the n-word anymore." They're saying they want EVERYBODY to stop using it.

I still don't understand what is controversial about that.

Huh, I guess I should watch the video.

Oh wait, I did! One man does mention to the women that they are not ho's & so forth, but the whole rally was centered around the n-word. I feel that if they wanted to "bury" all the words, they would have named it something different.

I understand that they are denouncing anybody using the n-word regardless of race. That is pretty much the whole point of having the funeral and they even interview a white women. My statement of thinking that it was strange that they called each other that was an opinion and I have always wondered that - not just because they had this funeral.

Who the oprah cares?! People will continue to use it regardless, that's just how things are, no way around it. And, by atrracting more atention to it, the use will be increased - guaranteed. If that's the case, let's have a ceremony and bury the "affirmative action" concept.

The mayor of Detroit is known for his shady dealings. Whos pocket is this coming from.....ours. Nobody funded this thing.
I absolutely agree that people should stand and fight for what they believe in...no questions about that from me.

That's exactly my point!

The march was part of the NAACP's convention in Detriot. I think it's safe to assume the NAACP is funding it.

Anyway, I still don't see what is remotely controversial about a group of people standing up and saying that an extremely insulting and degrading word should no longer be used.

I guess...it's a free country, they can say whatever the oprah they want. won't be the first nor the last time.

We call people who can hear, audists or hearies. Doesn't sound too offensive.

It wouldnt bother me if people called me a cracker, honky, whatever. There is no racial slur for a caucasian that could ever make me as mad as that other word would make a black guy.

Now personally, to me, that word describes someone with a certain attitude, not a certain skin color. Ive met black people who definitely werent and who definitely are and the same goes for white people. My brother for instance totally is. They are a kind of person, not a race of people.
