My mom cannot get dsl or cable internet where she lives and I am out of the dial up internet loop.

What are her best options?

Depends on her needs. Obviously, if she just wants to surf teh web and have email, then the cheaper the better, right?

Maybe NetZero?

NetZero or Juno unless her public library has free (but limited) internet service.

Do they still make 56k modems?

I think AOL still offers a dial-up service or Peopelpc

I was looking at netzero.. 9.95 a month..
years ago when I had dial up it was unlimited internet access.. Is it still that way?

Yep. Its just not free anymore. NetZero used to be an ad-based free service. Now you just pay your $10 a month for unlimited access with no ads all over the place.

PeoplePC is also unlimited for $10.

CORRECTION: from ConsumerSerach (top rated ISPs)

• PeoplePC dial-up
(*est. $11 per month)
Dial-up.

Although Earthlink tops nearly every review we found for dial-up Internet service, it actually costs more than basic DSL from AT&T Yahoo! and Verizon, which don't tie up your phone line. If you want unlimited low-cost dial-up service, subscribers say they are satisfied with PeoplePC. Unlike a free ISP like Juno, PeoplePC gives you unlimited access. The basic plan gives you two e-mail address, a pop-up blocker and virus protection.

• NetZero or Juno dial-up
(Up to 10 hours of free usage per month)
Free dial-up.

If your needs amount to occasionally checking your e-mail or a little web surfing, NetZero and Juno (which are owned by the same parent company) offer a free dial-up Internet connection for up to 10 hours each month. In exchange for a free ISP, you'll have to contend with permanent advertising on your computer screen. Once your 10 hours are up, you'll be charged about $10 a month for ad-free access.

We had PeoplePC for a long time, and it worked great. It was 9.95 per month, and we really liked it a lot (well, as far as dial-up goes)! They upgrade you to PeoplePC accelerated for free as well.

If you need the speed, you could always go for satellite systems. I use to have one back in the day before cable was offered in our area.

We had the intro 14.95 for a year AOL and when that ended we called to cut it off, they put us at a set rate of 14.95 for good, so that's not bad for AOL, I find AOL is the easiest as far as user friendly goes

Thats strange, I have aol dial up and only pay $9.95 a month for unlimited service and 7 email accounts?? You might want to check into that. As far as dsl, I can't get it where I live either and satelite is way more expensive, so I'm still stuck on dial up as well.

Thanks for the info, Dixie! I am going to have a little chat with them about this! :bigok:

Pug Girl, if your mom lives in certain parts of KY, there are some decent priced dial up options, I finally was able to get DSL where we live through SouthEast Telephone, they also offer dial up.

I would tell her to move. Kidding-I used to use www.juno.com when I had dial up. It was good and cheap.
