You can stop unwanted telemarketing calls beginning in October under the nationwide program. Only California residential and mobile telephone numbers are eligible for this program. Business telephone numbers are excluded. Telemarketing firms will face $11,000 fines per violation for calling anyone on the list.
 
The legal way... as opposed to the illegal way?
 
What I meant was that now you can take the help of the LAW to stop the telemarketing companies from bothering you. I think one can sue them for about $11,000 if they do not follow the norms that are being laid out. Ofcourse this figure needs to be clarified and may vary too.

The other most common methods of stopping these unsolicited calls are to use a tele-zapper, pretty effective for the time being.
