I noticed today that my friend had "ask for ID" on the back of her credit/debit card. I asked what that was all about and she said its a better idea to put that than your signature, because then if its stolen the person knows how to sign your signature. When the cashier sees the `ask for ID" they do, this cashier did anyway and Michelle whipped out her license. I never thought of that, since my sigs are mostly worn off I`m going to take a sharpie and do that to mine to.

Interesting.....wonder if that's 'allowed'.... Some stores here already as for ID when charging.

I have !!!!show id!!! on my cards and 8/10 times they don't even notice it

I have my cards signed and I have "ask for id' written. If it's not signed and somebody steals your card, they can sign your name in their own handwriting.

I also have "ASK FOR ID" on my card.. I do feel safer that way.

I had friends that did that. They ran into places not accepting their cards. I would say it is a good idea to sign it and write 'ask for ID'. Like suggested earlier.

Credit Card is actually not valid until you sign it. Like previous post says, if you don't sign it then the theif will! I have always signed mine on 1/2 the side and I have always had "ASK FOR ID" in large print on the other 1/2. Again, like a previous post said, 8 out of 10 times I NEVER get asked to show my ID.

Funny thing is, I can go to Wal-Mart and spend $100 on stuff and never get asked b/c I just swipe it through... especially on the self-checkout lines. I can go to Kroger (grocery store) and buy a $0.99 candy bar through ANY line (even self-checkout), and I am asked to sign a receipt and show my ID. Maybe it is just my local store. EVERY time I go to Lowes, they ask to see my credit card and enter my last 4 digits as verification. They don't ask to see my ID or my signature on the back... but they at least get my last 4 digits... for whatever reason. :)

I think it is a good idea to write it on your card... but please sign it too.

I also use a Sharpie to write "ASK FOR ID" in the signature space. No one ever does. Even when my card wont read, they look at the back and they still dont. Sometimes I b!tch about them not asking. Once, a lady told me... well, lets not get me all worked up.

I never get asked to show ID when I use my card. I use it for debit and credit. The only problem w/ using a sharpie is it can be wiped off by using rubbing alcohol. If my purse and keys were stolen the robber would have my card and a way to get the writing off. I have on my keys one of those hand sanitizer thingamajigs.
Something to think about.

First of all if youre so concerned, get your photo put on your card.

Second, as mentioned a card is a legally binding contract that is ONLY completed if you sign that card as it's the same as signing the contract.

So if I don't sign the card, I don't have to pay the bill?

I wrote "ask for ID" on one of my cards a long time ago. When I go shopping, I dont like to carry a purse especially shopping for clothes. So I am out serious shopping one day - I had stuck my credit card in my pocket. When it came time to check out - the clerk checked the back of my card and asked for my id - WHOOPS!!! I didnt bring it!

Here is the sad part - I left the store - wiped off "ask for ID", signed my name, went back into the store, picked my items back up, went to a different checkout and VOILA bought my stuff!

Even more sad - I cant remember the last time I was asked for my ID or any kind of verification when using credit/debit card. I swipe it and that is it.

Bottom line: if someone is smart enough to steal your identity or credit cards - they are usually smart enough to get past signatures, ids and pins!

My only question is this.......did you get to purchase the coordinating shoes?

If yes, then it was not a total disaster.:p

Yeah, I used to do this too. Very rarely did a clerk ever ask for my Id. I stopped bothering.
