As gas prices continue to increase, Congress continues to blame others while ignoring practical steps to stop the pain Americans are feeling at the pump. To lower gasoline prices and reduce our dependence on foreign oil, we need real solutions to our energy challenges.

A Real Change Campaign to Lower Your Gas Prices.

As of June 19th, 1,018,545 people have signed the petition. We need to send as many names as posssible to Congress on this petition. Let them know how you feel about the gas prices you are paying.

It's hardly a solution. The US has ~21 billion barrels of oil reserves, but we use about 21 million barrels/day, i.e., there's about 1,000 days worth of oil in the US. In 3 years, we'd be back to square one, except with NO oil and 100% dependence on foreign oil.

Today, we only drill about 5 million barrels/day and import the rest in order to conserve some of those reserves; this strategy will tide us over for roughly another decade, which might possibly be enough time to find some other source of oil.

The bottom line is there just isn't enough oil in the US to be self-sustaining at this rate of use. The last time the US had enough oil for that was nearly 40 years ago.

[P.S. The USGS very recently announced some newly discovered deposits in Montana/N. Dakota --- those, the largest contiguous source in the US, would buy us an additional 6 months with some tricky drilling.]

I'm for prices keep going up to ridiculous amounts. This way, people will be forced not to buy big cars. The plants will stop making SUVs and F150 trucks, and everyone who can afford it, will be driving this or equivalent :druel:

I am kinda straddling the fence on this one~while I see no point in owning a Hummer or Sequoia (?sp), pretty much an SUV is your only choice if you have a family with say, three kids. There seems to be nothing else you can buy for the entire family to fit into or you can split up and drive in two smaller cars which I don't see saving any gas whatsoever. So in addition to efficiency we need reasonable family cars. We would love to dump our SUV but we cannot find a family car.

It's going to be a scary ride for all of us I think with these life-altering gas prices. It does not seem like they are going away any time soon, if ever.

That could be a problem...the solution? - Chinese are doing it :convinced:

The only thing I want to "drive" at these high gas prices is my kid's tricycle. LOL

The Tesla is cool, but where does the electricity come from?
Mostly still from 'fossil fuels'

I think about 50% of the 'science' we're getting fed on a daily basis is bullsh____

Er, I mean Biomass.

Hubby's beloved truck is parked and looks to stay that way. He's even talked about trading both the car and the truck in on a more efficient economy car. The boat he planned on getting and pulling with his truck is a dream that was nice while it lasted but just a dream.

Ok Now I'm inclined to put my 2 cents in for all it might be worth! I truly feel that we NEED to do some off shore drilling...and in shore too! It's a SCIENTIFIC FACT that there's PLENTY of OIL in North Dakota to sustain this country for 100 YEARS!!!!
While I don't think we should just rely on that and offshore drilling, it would buy us time to develop other types of fuel such as hydro fuel and build the hydro-highways and electrical cars that can go further!
Here in Florida off the coast there's plenty of fuel but our CFO (Chief Financial Officer) MS Alex Sink stated that the REASON she doesn't want to drill is that it would HURT TOURISM! No offense but as a former NYer I'd much rather look at off shore rigs and still go to the beach then pay these high prices! PLUS-IF we keep HIGH Prices at the rate they're climbing who will travel far from home?
This is the letter I sent to Ms Alex Sink:
Dear Ms Sink,
I was horrified to learn that you were AGAINST offshore drilling.
First of all we Americans and especially Floridians are struggling to make ends meat, and the prices of gas are soaring!
We should, as a NATION be looking to get away on relying on foreign oil! And instead , relying on our own resources while exploring alternative forms of fuel.
I as a Floridian originally from the great state of NY would rather look at an offshore oil rig on one of our glorious beaches knowing I can afford the gasoline to get me there then to rely on paying the exorbitant price of a gallon of gas! With gasoline having skyrocketed in the past 10 years (in 1998 I can remember buying a gallon of gasoline at Racetrac on Normandy Blvd for $.899 per gallon) how DARE YOU not do something to help out Americans.
I again reiterate that I would love to look at an oil rig ANY DAY OF THE WEEK then to spend what I'm spending on gasoline today!
You're worried about tourism! Well let me just say this...If the price of gasoline keeps going up, many Americans who would otherwise come to Florida to vacation will be doing there vacations closer to home. So what is your point?
I know I probably won't get a personal reply but I felt a necessity to email you to let you know how disturbed I feel! And I KNOW I am NOT alone!
Now I no longer wonder why America is going to heck in a hand basket when our own officials can't see the forest from the trees!

For those of you who wish to write our "WONDERFUL" MS SINK here's her email address:

And I sincerely hope you will!
I agree about Trucks and SUV's to a certain extent! My husband has an F-150 but now is only driving it AS NEEDED due to high Gas Prices! But I think we NEED to get them to be hybrid or better yet Hydra Powered! They say powering Hydra cars is only about $1.00 per gallon so what the heck are we waiting for????????????????? Not to mention they're environmentally friendly! and totally GREEN..NO fumes in the air WHAT-SO-EVER!
Sunni;-)
PS- Yes I WILL be signing THE PETITION!

Did someone here say "No need for SUV's"???? Where I live it starts snowing before Halloween and keeps going until after Easter! My husband wouldn't be able to get to work w/out an SUV. And I agree about the family thing. I just got a new van (3rd one). I really wanted to downsize but now that we need carseats (compared to when we were growing up) -If you have 2 adults and 2 carseats and want to take anyone else with you-you need the room. Doesn't it just stink that there's no easy and comfortable solution to all this?

Finally! Someone that knows what is really going on with our oil reserves both on and off shore. Thanks sunninjimmy for speaking up...and for being an informed american. And thanks for signing the petition...this petition is going to Congress on July 4th....the people of this country need to take a stand and stand up for what is right and what is fair for all americans. I am tried of all the promises and yet...nothing is being done.
Unfortunately we have too many of these "WONDERFUL" MS SINK in our government.

We can't even afford to buy a good used car. We just got a '98 Dodge Stratus which is pretty good on gas, but have a total of $1000.00 in it so far and it still needs work. We are in a recession and heading towards a depression if the government doesn't do something soon.
