My parents are ready to get another DVD player for the basement to replace the VCR, however my mom likes to sometimes record stupid things like gymnastics and ice skating if she's not around, or of they're on at the same time (OH NOES!). She asked for my help, but i dont know anything about DVD Recorders.

First off, Do they make dvd recorders/players in the same unit? im pretty sure this is a yes, but i can't remember clearly

Secondly, in order to use a dvd recorder, do i/we need to be subscribers to some type of service (TiVo) or can i just plug it into my tv and record whenever?

Thirdly, DVD-R is the preferred media for DVD recorders I heard?

Lastly, Suggestions and/or good deals on said recorders?

If I'd need a dvd recording service (tivo) then suggestions/deals for dvdplayer/vcr combos?

Thanks in advance guys! :claps:

Yes. You're correct.

No.

Yes, but some accept other media.

Not sure. Sorry.

If mom doesn't want to deal with DVD-Rs (which I'd assume is the case) I'd HIGHLY recommend a DVD recorder with a hard drive. You'll pay a little more, but its well worth the price. Although Tivo with DirecTV is the best invention ever created, the DVD recorders with a hard drive will basically do the same thing (except for record two shows at once while watching a recorded show) without a monthly fee. Plus it makes it much easier to transfer from the DVD recorder hard drive to DVD media.

BTW, I'd recommend the Panasonic DMR-EH50 or the Pioneer DVR-531H-s or 533H-s DVD recorders.

Good luck!

Thanks for your help, Big Daddy. Just so I have a nice array to give to my mom, can you reccommend any non-HDD type recorders?

I bought a Cyberhome 1600 model from my local Circuit City. It was around $87 after rebate including sales tax.

I did some research and some recorders can be had for around $80, but this had the most bang for the buck. Supposedly, I haven't tried, but you can use DVD-R media on it even though it is advertised only for DVD+R media. Also, it is supposed to play DiVX media. I haven't tried any features to confirm, but only the model with an MU at the end has these features, so you might want to make sure that it is the MU model at the store and not the ZU. I've been very pleased with the machine so far, especially for a generic unit.

Philips DVD recorder

if you aren't too picky about having a slight blemish on the unit you are buying, you should try the Philips online outlet.philips outlet

They have the top of the line recorder for 800 new but refurbished for 169 with free shiping, i have been looking at that and plan on purchasing it sometime as basketball season is back and i need to tape some games.
GO WARRIORS, good luck and hope this helps
