(Expired) Canon PowerShot SD770IS 10MP 3X Digital Camera for $144.95 Shipped

You're comparing two completely different cameras. The samsung is a lower quality digital camera, while it is 10MP the quality of it is most likely more poor than higher end ultra compacts with 5-8MP. There is also no image stabilization, and the quality of a canon lens is probably a lot better than the "samsung" lens (possibly rebranded too) on that camera.
and both cameras are 10MP, I don't see how the samsung is more than the canon. More megapixels doesn't mean better quality, my 5MP canon takes better pictures than a ton of point and shoots out there today.

The samsung does have image stabilization as well as face detection. For that price and more "average" consumers, the samsung is a better deal by a long shot.

The Samsung is stated to be 10.2 MP. In Spinal-Tap Style- "that's 0.2 MP more"!

And it has image stabilization as well as face recognition, so I'm not sure where you got that from. As far as the lens- in this camera style with the tiny lens, its pretty much a don't care. If you're worried about the lens you need to upgrade to an SLR or at least a large-lens camera like the Fuji S7000. No one seriously shops in these tiny fit-in-my-pocket niches with *the lens* as a deciding factor.

And it probably IS rebranded as it's likely that Samsung doesnt have their own lens manufacturing. So you get a Carl Zeiss lens for a Samsung price. I like it!

I'm thinking you're just plain contrary? Or perhaps bitter you spent twice as much for the same specs in your camera.

No, he's right. That Samsung is a Walmart-type camera. One look at Samsung's product page tells me all I need to know. I would assume it takes adequate pictures, but there's a lot more to a camera than that. If you spend a lot of time with it, you'll realize what's missing. (I've used some pretty crappy cameras in the past, so I know.)

Basically, it's not for discriminating customers. It's probably good for a child or a grandparent though.

I'll pay the "premium" for the Canon. And don't forget that $150 for a near-cutting-edge ultracompact camera is ridiculously cheap compared to even just the last generation or two: you used to have to pay $300 for such a device.

Regardless if it's .2MP more, the quality is still extremely poor. "Don’t be fooled by the promise of 10.2 megapixels. The images look more like they were taken with a 3.0 megapixel camera. " - from http://www.product-reviews.net/review/20081124/samsung-bl103/ (always read some reviews before you buy a camera).

The samsung has digital image stabilization; anyone that knows a few things about cameras knows that this type of IS isn't very good. While it's better than nothing, OIS (optical image stabilization) is much better.
Also, I never said the samsung didn't have face detection. FD is usually a gimmick anyway. My TZ5 has it and I never use it, using any other focus mode works just as well.
I do agree that for more "average" consumers, the samsung is a better deal. In the long run I'd prefer and recommend a camera that will last a while though. One of my friends bought a samsung (S860), that has digital image stabilization but pretty much every picture without the flash comes out blurry (with my TZ5 I can take pictures without flash fine, since it has OIS). She's also having issues with the lens motor (won't retract the lens anymore, and has to push it back in), and I know she takes care of her camera, and it's almost ALWAYS in a case.

Having a better lens in a smaller camera is noticable. Read up on it, I've read plenty.

The post above me explains a lot too. I agree with it all :)

And simply put, if the samsung was a better deal, higher quality camera companies like canon would be out of business.

The SD790 is on spoofee's more recent deals, if you want a larger screen for the same price I'd go with that since this deal is dead now.
