Sunrocket End of Summer sale - 2 years of VOIP for $199.

Note - Starting Oct. 1 Sunrocket and other VOIP providers will have to start charging the FCC mandated Universal Srvice Fund subsidy, so they will have to either raise prices or add a surcharge.

This notice is from SunRocket's member portal:
"Universal Service Fund
The Universal Service Fund (USF) subsidizes rural phone companies, phone service for qualified low-income households, and telecom services for schools and libraries. Effective Oct 1, the Federal Communications Commission is requiring Internet phone companies to make direct USF contributions. SunRocket will begin charging the USF Fee, which will be applied to your monthly invoice if you are enrolled in a monthly plan or will be applied when you renew your annual service plan. For more information, please visit http://www.fcc.gov/oig/oigaudpm-usf.html."

Sounds like SunRocket isn't going to pass along this cost until renewal time, so sign up now and avoid two years of this tax.

You also have to pay $40 plus tax for the equipment, so it is $239 (many Voips offer free equipment).

You get what you pay for. I switched to Vonage, and have never looked back. Sunrocket was nothing but issues, problems, and bad customer support.

my currrent provider is packet8. i switched to sunrocket, and switched back within the same day. the quality is terrible - it kept cutting out and seemed like you were far away. also, the customer service is really weird. we keep getting emails saying that our "issue" was resolved, and that they had to cancel us because E911 isn't available (not true - we called them and canceled because of the service) - it seemed like they were trying to save their stats. also, before we realized that they suck, we initiated a number transfer - so before we canceled service, we canceled the transfer. we've gotten several emails saying the transfer was canceled, then saying that it went thru and we'd have to take extra steps, and then saying that it was resolved - really confusing.

anyway, that's what i think... not worth the hassle.

I'm sure there must be some benefits to using these services, but I have found Skype to be the best for me. I Use it primarily for calls to Europe from US. Minimal problems.

I've had SR for 2 years and have had no problems what-so-ever

They do give the equipment out for free when there is no deal. Still $10.42/month for unlimited calling is pretty sweet.

E911

Be careful with these. If you need to call 911, a completely land-line free VOIP, both Sun Rocket and Vonage, may route calls to the wrong company or even the wrong state.

Hybrid VOIPS such as TW Cable Digital Phone offer a more reliable 911 service, but is a lot more expensive than Sun Rocket and Vonage.

What kind of charges occur when you move? If there is any? And, if you do move do you get to keep the same number if you move to a different state?

I forgot to mention, TW Cable Digital Phone also has a 10-hour battery backup (It's built into the modem), something the other services don't offer if your power goes out.

Sunrocket Get one year free w/ sign up

Sunrocket is running there $199 for two years vs the standard of one. It's one day only and ends today!

moving

As for vonage (and all voip i think) your phone # is linked to the mac on the phone adapter, so you can move anywhere you want and still use the same #. Just gotta update E911.. or when you actually need it it wont work correctily (police go to old address in old state)

- $20 extra per month for a 10 hour backup that you may or may not need.
- Futile if your internet connection is down, TW needs the backup, not you.
- Instead you can have a battery backup of your own for about 30-50 bucks from brands like APC. You have to remember that your VOIP is at the mercy of your internet provider to begin with. If you do not have a reliable internet service, no matter whom you go with for VOIP, you'll still get crappy phone connection.
I user SR as more like a basic phone and because DishNetwork requires a phone else they'll charge me $5 a month ($60 a year!!).

No charges from what I understand. You'll need to give your most current address where the VOIP box is going to be located so if E911 is nicely in place for that address, your 911 calls will go to the right location, else if you have say a Boston Number and moved to SFO, when a 911 is dialed, the Boston cops might end up at your address on file there since you were lazy not to update your address with your VOIP provider. Am not sure, but had read some time back that Vonage is lagging in E911 implementation and that SR and ViaTalk have been at the forefront.

I have used Vonage for over 2 years now. And no problems! Just make sure you have a Battery Backup on the Cable/DSL modem and on the Phone VOIP Box and
the phone nearest to it in case of power outage. Also two weeks ago my wife riped her leg open and I had to dial 911, and it worked perfectly. The operator just asked what Town I was calling from and then they got the ambulance out to my house. So no problems here with Vonage! :)

SunRocket support is kind enough to extend this offer to existing customers at the renewal time. If you are an existing customer and your agreement is up for renewal, try calling them up and ask for the promotion
