Microsoft Corp. said Thursday that prices for the Windows 7 computer operating system are largely in line with those for Vista, and that consumers who buy PCs before the new system goes on sale in October will get free upgrades.

I've been running Win 7 RC for the past month or so (since it was released) and must say I'm impressed. It does have quite a few quirks, like any new software. I did have problems getting drivers installed because the ones I had were written for XP. I found out that Win 7 has a compatibility mode that will let you use earlier drivers. I just wish they hadn't gotten rid of the classic start menu.

XP does what I want. I'd rather just buy a PC that comes with W7. That way I get a full version of it.

Yup we had to buy two laptops earlier in the year - we were going to wait until Windows 7 came out - but when your computers are dead not much you can do about it - we love this pre-order upgrade price - will the disk have the 64 bit versions on it ?

I am unsure whether it comes with 64 bit or not but if you pre-order from the Microsoft Store (same price) you can choose digital download option which will give you your key and have links to both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions which you can download and burn onto your own DVD.

I completely switched to ubuntu now because (1) its easier to use than windows, (2) more stable than windows, and (3) prettier than windows once you enable compiz-fusion. However, I still have a slight need for windows. My PC uses phoenix bios and their stupid installers require windows to update the bios. So if a new bios is installed, I have to reload windows using the recovery CD which conveniently wipes out my linux install, and literally takes about 6hrs to install itself (rather install windows and all the HP approved junk-ware). After a quick bios update I am able to wipe the hard drive, install ubuntu, and install all my apps in under an hour. Still its about a 7-8hr process to update my bios. $50 sounds reasonable to get a real install CD that will allow me to avoid using the recovery CD and loosing 8 hrs of my life.

I don't quite agree ubuntu is easier to use than window.
Anyway, I think the windows 7, although it is a little bit better than vista, it is more like vista sp2 than a new edition of window.
I am staying with XP for now.

You really need to set it up as a dual-boot (pretty sure ubuntu allows that as an installation option), and save yourself all that effort.

(1) absolutely not (2) Not necessarily. I have no Windows stability issues. (3) user preference

If you have an older PC with Windows XP, I would recommend you keep it. If you have a dual core computer, you should upgrade especially since the price is only $50!

My current system is Q6600 with 4GB ram, I still like to keep my xp. Why should I give up the performance for a bad window? I don't see win7 is a whole a lot better than vista.

A Q6600 runs Vista and 7 PERFECTLY. There is NO slowdown compared to XP on a Q6600. Have you actually tried it yourself or do you just listen to what everyone tells you? Download the 7 RC for free and try it out.

Yeah, I have the same setup and vista works fine here.

Yeah. any computer user that knows the smallest bit about computers should eb able to keep a windows machine running smoothly and very stable. It really isnt that hard.

This is an update cd. You'd have to have proof of XP or Vista to use it. ALso, Vista Basic doesn't qualify. Windows Vista removed the disc check method for upgrades, instead requiring you start the upgrade from within an existing install of Windows.

as a professional tech guy, I don't just hear what people say, I tried myself, both vista and win7rc.
Win7 indeed gives me back a normal window speed. But it still feels like a bit of a drag, and too many fancy stuffs, xp is more clean cut.

Doesn't XP only use 3.2gb of that RAM? I know mine does and I consider that a significant waste. It also doesn't recognize single drives or arrays over 2TB in size. XP is getting older and isn't going to be able to keep up with new hardware. Personally, I think it's time to upgrade. :pcguru:

I may go ahead and buy the upgrade and file it away. Once Win7 hits SP1 then I'll prop go ahead and upgrade...

There 'might' be a 'family bundle' (3 = small group license) that is cheaper than if you bought 3 licenses individually. This could be a deal, but since the actual product isn't out it, its hard to judge pre-order prices.
Not saying this deal is good or bad, just saying you don't need to freak out and quickly pre-order. Who knows, it might be cheaper when it actually comes out...

Like I said earlier, I'm happy with the Win7 release candidate. But, I'm not so sure I'll upgrade to it until I'm "forced." It has a lot of stuff automatically loaded with it, which I don't like. There's very little user control during installation, so it automatically installs Aero and Windows Defender. I spent about 30 minutes installing it only to spend 5 hours uninstalling things I don't like or want. Then, there's the drivers issue for older equipment...
