Yup, I'm still on dialup. (Although I don't pay for it) Despite being a heavy user of computer services I just never could justify the cost of cable/DSL broadband.

If I need to do a big dl, I go to the library with laptop and plug in my Netgear wireless adaptor - (courtesy of a Spoofee deal - thanks again Spoofee :D )

Otherwise for all my routine computer needs dialup suffices. The savings of $30 to $40 a month over 1 year buys a nice long ski weekend in Maine.

My parents and mother-in-law still use dial-up. Although they can easily afford cable or DSL, they're in no rush and have lots of free time to wait. ;)

i have broadband, but because the company i get it from sucks, it uses cable for downloads and dial up for uploads. so, this modem would actually make it better for me since i would no longer have to rent the modem from my broadband provider. thanks!!

you need a broadband modem for your broadband connection. It won't work with this 56k modem.

you mean you cant use a regular modem for a broadband connection?

I think some of the satelite based broadband systems use a dialup modem for the uplink part of the connection. At least they once did. The downlink is handled by the satellite feed.

If you ever listen to Kim Komando, she used to have this setup as she lived out in the desert where there is no cable/DSL.

Another use for dialup is when you go to places where there is no broadband. When I go snowboarding in Maine, NH, or Quebec there is barely phone service if you're lucky at the ski condo let alone broadband.

I bring the laptop and connect from the condo's phone line. Sometimes I have to make a long distance call as there are no local points of presence.
