Ok, my points here:
#1 - If parents don't agree with the content, don't give them to your kids!!!
#2 - Considering all the violence and states of alarm that kids are exposed to everyday (both at home and in public or media) I think it's time to STOP trying to spare them from the real truth about the world in which they live! They need to learn that there are some religious radicals that do some horrific things to hurt other people.
(of course, explained in their own ability to understand and with carefully chosen words)...
#3 - IMHO, kids today are WAY too sheltered from reality and protected from all the things we weren't : remember lawn darts and jungle gyms built on grounds of concrete. We'd skin our knees an/or get an infection or bad tummy aches when we ate bad choclate bars we found on the ground? Some of us even remember those safety drills at school where they hid under the desk, as if that would save them, just incase a bomb destroyed it during WW2. There were no sanitizing wipes and our immune systems got stronger because it was exposed to tons of germs) The kids of today are terrified of neighboorhood "boogey" men and not allowed to play outside or ride bikes down the street cause they might be kidnapped or get shot by gangs. Kids are exposed to real violence at home and at school but they can't be sheleterd from EVERYTHING. The bombing of the twin towers was real and if you think children aren't looking while you watch the news or listening when you say "dirty words" or are esposed to sexual assault by victims in their own school or by someone they trust, you're so very kidding yourself!
#4 - I think that kids of that age would be more interested in coloring the picture than asking what it represents.
#5 - Remember, freedom of the press and your right to know as well as that of you kids are being threatened everyday by people who lobby to remove "politically incorrect" or "objectionable material"
such as this - like banning classic books such as Tom Sawyer from schools...
and, finally
#6 - What on earth do these people think that FEMA does anyway? (well, except when "Brownie" was in charge).
Seems to me that these "inappropriate" images relate a pretty accurate representation of FEMA's role in disaster prevention and response.
i'm expecting some very negative, oppositional comments on some of these analogies or comments in this post and that's all well and good. The US Constitution grants us our freedom of expression - well, unless it offends the opinions of others!
