My Father’s Love and My Mother's Love are free 18-page books that were created for children to preserve the love of their fathers and mothers. They were written directly following the World Trade Center tragedy by a NJ educator at the request of a Mom of three young children who lost their father.
Love Letters are handmade notes of care that have been written by children in NJ schools. These cheerful cards are included with copies of the books. This child to child effort was the idea of the author's six year old daughter. She thought it might be nice for each child who got a book to also receive a card. Children are capable of great compassion and love when we give them the tools to respond in time of need. This creates joy for the giver, as well as the receiver.
Children learn by doing. In working through the exercises in the book, they are able to remember and begin to talk about feelings for their father or mother. Although the book was designed for children, many adults have used them to help process their grief in a loving way. Mothers of infants, or who have yet to give birth have used them to record information about their husbands to share with their child at a later time.
