This is the retail product and comes with a 1 year of updates, just like most anti-virus software does. Not sure where you read you must purchase a subscription for update separately.

Im sure you dont have to , live update is for 1 year from the time u install it , and its valid for a year whenever you reinstall it

Unfortunately, (for Norton) yes, you get a year every time you uninstall & reinstall.

Not true anymore. Try reinstalling and the expiration date will not change. If you are using 2003 I suggest letting that expire first before installing 2004 so you get the most out of it. There are not sigificant changes from 2003 to 2004 anyway.

So what happens after that one year? Does Norton AV just instantly become useless? No, you buy the updates. That's the subscription.

Anyways, NAV puts an expiration date under its key in the registry. If you change it to June 25, 2024, then you will have free updates for 20 years.

I'm sorry, you're right. About once a year I reformat my old 98 machine. When I install my NAV (on a clean registry) it starts the year again. I'm not 100% sure about ME, 2K or XP.

Never Paid for Norton AV

I haven't paid for Norton AV for the past 4 to 5 years. Every year, I can find it for free after rebates at one retailer or another. Nor have I ever had any problems with receiving my rebates. This year I actually received my rebates for Norton 2004 in less than 3 weeks!

They've gone to a Product Activation scheme this year, ala Win XP, so it may not be so easy to re-install if you registered it the first time. And you have to register to get the virus definition updates.
