will have to buy the starter kit for 9.99 ....

I just tried it - the starter kit's only necessary if you don't have speakers and a microphone. If you have skype installed, you just Use It and It Works.

great! will try. skype pc to pc quality is excellent...! even across the planet.

Great !!! This should put pressure on the likes of Vonage and other VOIP providers, including the more established/conventional players such as Verizon/Comcast.

I can't get it to work

I keep getting the message "you need skype credit to call to standard phones".
Does that skype credit need to be purchased?

just tried it. actually, i'm still talking as i type. ;) working great. just remember when dialing to start with "+1" then the area code and number.

It says I need skype credit in order to make the phone call...
???

Good deal. The only bad thing is that it lasts only till the end of the year, so who knows what will happen after that (when you get used to it being free). However, I found something similar to Skype a few months ago. I'm sure it doesn't have all the features, but it's worth a try. I tested it, and it works fine.

It's called voIP STUNT. You can make free calls to any regular phone from your PC to about 20 different countries, including US and Canada. Give it a try.

whats the big deal?

whats the big deal if you have cell phone with free nationwide calling? i mean no one really uses up their minutes anyway... Is this just for fun or do you think it's really practical?

yes that's what it says, but ignore it and dial away..... (just remember to start with "+1", then area code and #)

hmmmm, not everyone is endowed with a cell phone..... however, it's "fun" to try anyway. it's the "spirit" of getting something for "free." and in the mean time, maybe they get you hooked to add a few pennies to their coffer and dial those international numbers.....

I myself can agree with that, but my sister, girlfriend, mother...would not. They go over all the time. Never fails.

What's good about VOIP STUNT is that you can call 20 different countries for free, and not only US and Canada.

haa, i checked it out. free for the 1st minute w/o registering (what they called "topping off" your account). don't understand the 120days thing and it doesn't say in the intro, how much you have to "contribute" to get "unlimited" to those 20+ free landline destination countries..... i didn't register.

They must have changed something since then. I tried it a few months ago. On with the Skype then!

I am really missing something could you provide the exact syntax?

i.e. +12125551212?

Thanks really hoping this works.

that seems to be the right format. I ignored the message but got another that said the same thing in a red background. I read about needing an account balance to activate skypeOut. is that why it's not working? has anyone else gotten it to work with a $0 balance?

Use the + key not the one on the phone pad that is on your screen. Use your key pad. It works great. Computer geeks has a free usb phone with rebate. skype is cool.:bigok:
