This has usually been the case, just like the Seattle film company (not sure if they are still around). If you get the free film then you supposedly need to develop it with Mystic film labs (which is not cheap) because it is supposedly breaks the machines at like CVS or wal-mart or something. Not sure if all that is still relevant, but even if not I am sure they perpetuate it to scare you into sending it back to them.

Regardless of all that the prints you do get from them are very nice and very good quality, just more expensive.
