How to Obtain a Free Grave Marker
Unfortunately, most of the graves of soldiers who died during our wars are forgotten and unmarked. It is sad that many families can't afford to place a headstone on the final resting places of veterans who survived our wars and returned to the United States to live until their natural end.

Free veteran grave markers for most of the unmarked graves of any American veteran can be ordered from the U.S. Veterans Administration. They are available in a variety of types and are made of either granite, marble or bronze. Any person can order a memorial marker for the veteran. It is not necessary to be a descendant or relative.

To obtain an Application for Standard Government Headstone or Marker, write to the following address:

Monument Service
Department of Memorial Affairs
Veterans Administration
941 N. Capitol St., N.E.
Room 9320
Washington, D.C. 20420

thanks, Imhilly, this is will be a great help for my neighbor who just lost her husband who was career military.

I think this is a wonderful link. I will not be using it, but I think it is great for those that need it.

If I remember correctly the Vets Admin offered $300 towards my Fathers Grave marker but i didn't follow up. That was about 16 years ago.
However, I do think it is inappropriate for people to be busy spending Uncle Sam's money unless they really need it. I buried my father in Greenwood Cemetery alongside my Mother and grandparents and a lot of other ancestors without asking for the freebie!
I do know of, and have helped a few people obtain markers for their relatives when I knew they could not afford them!

That's really cool. Thanks for the post, lmhilly!

I think that every deceased veteran deserves to have a grave marker. They served their country and they are entitled to this marker whether they can afford it or not.

GREAT POST Imhilly. Thank you.
