Friends?

OK, slap me with a trout, but what is this feature?

I have had some kind people request to be my friend (TY :) ) but I kinda thought we were all friends? I read the social groups thread and it explained nothing except arguing over whether we should have it or not. What are the functions, pros/cons? Thanks so much!
 
According to the documentation, the only differences between friend/not friend are:
1) name appears in a friend list on your profile
2) the name in the "active user" list shows a "+"
 
Actually the ability to add make someone a friend was here before the updates, just was not as "fancy" as it is now. As for the social groups they are just that groups where you can join and discuss the the topics of the individual groups. It is really nothing different than posting in the open forum, just a little more on topic oriented. There are no pros/cons it was just something that was included in the VBulletin updates and Spoofee decided to leave them for the forum members to use.
 
Someone asked me but I couldn't figure out how to :/
