How long do you get updates? With GPS built into phones now, this had better have a lifetime of updates or it isn't worth a penny.

For a previous question on how long you get updates, the 'LM' in the model name means 'Lifetime Maps', which is the product's 'useful life' , not your lifetime. That sounds sneaky, but the details on the Garmin website make it seem like it would be a pretty long time.

I have a Garmin GPS from 2008. It is acting up but I can still get map updates.

'This is satellite, its not the same as phones.' That comment makes no sense. They are both GPS based. If you're referring to Google maps then yes you need the data access to dynamically pull in the Google map data (hence never needing an update.) The Garmin has static maps and do not need data.
