Backyard firepits are against the law in NYC.....

Every store is selling them in NYC..:argh:....apparently you can sell and buy these products in NYC, you just can't light them. And of course, they don't tell you in the store that these are just overpriced lawn ornaments and planters.:lost:

BTW it applies to all chimineas, fire pits, fire places, hearths, etc.....doesn't matter if they are charcoal, wood burning or gas....:nono:

:flame: :whip:

:mmph: .....and I was planning on buying this in the Fall......

Where can I get a deal on good chimineas?

BTW I put a firepit in last summer when I extended my patio, but I don't live in NY anymore.:tongue::tongue::lol:

I'm sure after that news story you can pick a 'used' one for cheap in NYC.....

I'd have been booted from NYC last night when I was out in the front yard burning weeds with a propane gas torch.

Hosed is more like it! :pound:

or were you hosed last night too?

Oh nooooo. I've been using my chimineas all this summer.

I bet it's like jaywalking. Nobody gives a shift.
I know in a commercial building I get a fire dept inspectiononce or twice a year whether I need it or not. They always find something to write a violation against.
They don't inspect residential do they?

Read and weep Jerry....and we're a heck of a lot more rural than Manhattan....:yesnod:

 I have a chiminea too.....

"The law for the fire accessories is enforced when a call is made to the Fire Department. If found by fire officials, they will order the use of the devices discontinued immediately, and no further action will be taken."

Don't call them.

What the hell is the difference between these things and a BBQ grill? I guess a BBQ has brning fat and grease PLUS you can feed the firefighters who turn out. :ack:

I'd purchase one and call it a "Rapid Oxidation Device". That will make it all legal.

"But sir, this is not a fire...it is rapid oxidation."

It's a law with no penalty for breaking it.

Where I come from, that's called a suggestion.

What's the law exactly?

What you posted is not (imho) a fire pit. That's a fireplace.

We had a FirePit in our backyard (we actually *just* (as in this past week) bulldozed it and put sod down; we're waiting until our kids are older to put one in again). Where we live the law is that it must be at least 10" in diameter, be surrounded by a non-combustible material and be at least 10 feet away from any house/garage/etc. Our FirePit was 4 feet deep in the ground with a round steel surround and then bricks around at the top. It was lovely... we had it for over (OMG) 10 years... I'm ready for a swing set for now though.

4 feet deep ??? what did you do roast pigs with it ?? How wide was that thing... lol

I actually have a 'pig roaster'....

Seriously, I've had it for years....but haven't used it in a few years. We used to throw large parties and roast pigs & lambs (it's an adopted Greek thing) for like 300+ people...those were the days before the kids drove us off the deep end.....and it's motorized too.

It looks like this.....

We bought it in Astoria.....big Greek area...

Well - I think it was because the last time you lit your fire pit - this happened:
(I just happened to have had my camera)

No way! People don't even have back yards in Astoria. You're certainly right about it being a big Greek area though. If I were in the market for a pig roaster (right - I can see that on the roof!) Astoria would not be the place I would go looking for it.

Although they do seem big on Kayaking http://www.licboathouse.org/
There is a private launch place just north of the Costco in Astoria.
