Gmail could be an unregistered trademark

Google has made multiple revisions to its prospectus, but still has not disclosed that it may not be able to continue using Gmail. The IPO prospectus clearly states, "Our unregistered trademarks include ... Gmail ...."

What a legal mess for Google.

Google will figure out a way to weasel themselves out of this.

"Maybe next time, Google should google before it chooses a name. "

Nice way to close the article, gave me a laugh at least!

I agree with Eric, although this is a mess, Google has enough cash to make this go away. If they can't come to an agreement, I bet Google will just discontinue the service temporarily and use a different name instead of fighting it in court.

Yeah, they could just make it Google Mail, except that everyone's e-mail addresses are already @gmail.com. That's the only real problem.

Well they would have to have allow everyone to keep their usernames as email addresses and have all mail sent to the old forwarded to the new boxes for a period of 6 months or whatever. Its the same thing my company just did when they changed their name. We still get the old email address mail rerouted to us. We have 6 months to let that person know about the changed email address. In 6 months, that address will no longer exist.

This is their best option unless they REALLY feel they have a case!

Pretty interesting. I heard they were slowing down on giving out free accounts.
I've been using Walla lately, same deal you get a gig but doubt I'll ever fill it up :P

Well, for those people who still want a gmail account, here is the way to do it without an invite...
https://www.google.com/accounts/New...ekey&followup=http://api.google.com/createkey

Create a Google account

Welcome to Google Accounts, the easy way to access all Google services that require a username and password.

The initial services available with your Google account are:

* Google in Your Language - volunteer to translate Google's services into various languages
* Gmail - free 1000 MB email service (Limited availability)
* Google Answers - paid researchers answer questions for you
* Google Web APIs - a tool for software developers to query Google automatically
* Google Groups - post and read comments in Usenet discussion forums

DOH!!! Gmail is STILL by invite ONLY

Grrr...This will NOT WORK. The url only creates a Google account for the Google API. Gmail is still reserved as an invite ONLY.

When you try to login after clicking the email confirmation sent by Google. This is what you will get when you try to log into Gmail:

Sorry, this is not a valid Gmail login.
You cannot log into Gmail using your Google Account username and password.

Gmail is in a limited test period and is only available to a small number of people who are helping test and improve the service before it is made more widely available.

If you have been asked to test Gmail and have not yet created a Gmail account, please click on the link in your invitation email.

DOH!!! :banghead:

Bummer. You would think that Google would then remove that line about giving you a gmail account.

Yeah, just keep in mind that it's pretty much advertisement driven and you'll probably get a lot of spam with it.

Good post nevertheless. Some people may find it useful.
