You need an invite. Occasionally Gmail has given their users the oppertunity to invite friends.

How do you get an invite is the big question. I received mine from blogger.com for one of the blogs I have set up. It was the newest blog, my older account/blog has not received an invite yet. I beleive it is just random invites to people maintaining a blog. You actually have to post semi regularly.

There is no word yet as to a timeframe Gmail will be widely available.

I would love to have an account. Really, I'd love to have my user name for it reserved as soon as possible, I think it'll be the e-mail of the future.
