My husband and I received a call last week inviting us to a free vacation weekend...it sounds like a scam but I'm not sure. I don't even know how these people got my phone number. It was through a timeshare developer, I believe. I've heard bad things about timeshares but a good friend of mine has had one for years and does nothing but rave about it. I'm thinking the free weekend might give me a taste of whatever he's got.

Uh oh... well I heard horror stories that they make you sit through intense sessions of trying to sell you timeshares for like 3-4 hours.

at the same time, I also know a couple that goes to those things to get free vacations. They just stay strong through the timeshare selling session.

It depends. If you are a strong person/couple and just want a deal.. I say go for it.

Search this forum - there's a thread about this from about a year or so ago. And a South park episode.

If you have good patience and willpower not to sign anything, you can get some nice stuff out of one of these "hard sell' weekends.

I would end of taking hostages.

Having used "Sky Auction" to make many travel plans, a few destination had me staying at places that offered Time Sharing. Beautiful, well constructed, well placed but often when I signed in, they TRIED to corner me into attending conferences, meetings, breakfasts whatever to interest me/mine in the idea of a time sharing. Time Sharing was very popular in the eighties and nineties and lost speed and interest. Now, if you are lucky you can pick up weeks for a song!! They just are not in favor anymore. Couple that with annoying interruptions to your vacation time, high pressured sales and the inability to sell your week/weeks if desired, it can be a nightmare.
Often, people go to festivals or affairs and sign up to win something, only to start getting pelted by time sharing offers in the mail or by phone. A quick way to get rid of these pesky callers is to tell them you are filing bankrupcy, that you don't meet the minimum salary requirements, or that you are on Social Security! One of my young neighbors up the street went on a timesharing vacation offer and spent four hours each day being drilled and grilled! Not my idea of a vacation, but, if it works for other people, and they can get a nice outing for free why not? Like Digriz says stay strong, be firm, and close your ears to them as they pressure you. Don't do anything you will regret a year from now.

Had a friend who said take the weekend. Sit though the talk. ACT as if you are going to sign, and mention something absolutely not allowed...like: "The horses will love it here!" "WHAT? We can't have horses? What kind of barbaric people are you?" Storm out and you're good to go!!! I don't have the patience!!!! Good luck!

There is usually a catch, credit card deposits are required. I had one salesperson get mad & hang up on me after she found out that I didn't have one.

I saw that South Park video, hilarious. I don't remember seeing that episode, but I caught it on youtube. I checked the other vids there, which are on Timeshare Relief. They're whole deal is getting people out of timeshare contracts, which says a lot about timeshares if they're in business.

I wouldn't go near one of those presentations if they gave me two weeks in paradise and threw in Salma Hayek!

Would Salma be DURING the two weeks, or an additional paradise? I need to think this one over.

I thought of this thread this afternoon. I got one of these phone calls today and he started by saying I'd entered to win...I was like "Really? I don't remember entering anything like this?" They also wanted $50 deposit that was supposedly refundable upon check in and the catch per caller was that I tell my friends and give them just a couple hours of my time. Yeh, me and my 5 and 2 year old!!!

They make is sound so tempting but you've just got to know there's something seriously wrong.

Anyone go on one and have no trouble or find it a good time?
