"WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — Les Paul, the guitarist and inventor who changed the course of music with the electric guitar and multitrack recording and had a string of hits, many with wife Mary Ford, died on Thursday. He was 94.

According to Gibson Guitar, Paul died of complications from pneumonia at White Plains Hospital. His family and friends were by his side.

As an inventor, Paul helped bring about the rise of rock 'n' roll and multitrack recording, which enables artists to record different instruments at different times, sing harmony with themselves, and then carefully balance the "tracks" in the finished recording."

Very very sad...my ex husband and one of my ex boyfriends were both musicians in bands and played guitar, otherwise i wouldn't really have any idea what a huge loss this is....

Les Paul lived in the same town where I am located in Northern NJ. He was a dear friend of one of my best friends. She used to go into NYC almost every week to socialize with and listen to him play. I never went, but she loved it--I was a Bill Evans person when he was alive and used to go to the Village Vanguard religiously whenever he appeared there. My father was a guitarist--and in those circles, Les Paul was so very highly respected.
