You know, I recently had back surgery and both a couple months before and after the surgery, I needed a handicapped tag (aka HAVE a temp tag that expires the end of this month) and since the surgery (no longer in wheelchair but still have to watch how far I walk sometimes) I find people look at me funny getting out of the car in a handicapped spot b/c I'm pretty young & not in a chair or using crutches. Really irks me...

This is a great idea -- I can't tell you how many times I've wanted to slap a note on someone's car b/c they're parked illegally (or just stupidly -- like double space parking!) I just wish we could fill out our info online rather than mail it in. I always forget to mail stuff out. :(

This is a great idea, some people need a reminder to jog their brain waves!! Thabk you!

:doh:Sorry, I really do know how to spell but I better start paying more attention before I hit the reply button!!

You could just edit it! :) If you do it soon enough after you post, it doesn't even show up as being edited so we'd never be the wiser! ;)

Great Post! I've got back and neck injuries due to car accidents where I was hit from behind. I've been looked at funny too b/c I'm not in a chair but there are days I feel ok and don't use the handicapped area..other days I'm forced to and it really irks me when I see people w/ out a placard using a space just to run into a store for a minute! That minute could be crucial to someone needing that space!

I too have a HC tag. Like Sunni, I don't need it everytime but there are days... Like Kaija, I will get looks from people because I park and when I walk in I seem fine. It's usually on the way out that I have the trouble. I have spinal stenosis (among other probs) . The pain worsens the longer i walk!!! So be judicious when slapping one of those post its on a car unless it's obvious like the time a person flew into the parking spot and RAN into the store.

If someone has a tag, I don't usually say or do anything. And yes, we've all seen people with tags that don't APPEAR to have any physical problems but...there are people who have heart issues, asthma, some may be going through radiation...not everyone has a PHYSICAL ailment that can be seen. For the ones who "borrow" a tag just to get closer to the building, your day will come when karma will bite you in the rear. For the ones who don't have a tag but use it because they don't want their vehicle scratched (because the spaces are larger to park in), we're watching you.

I don't have a tag nor will I "borrow" one. There are days that I don't feel like walking a mile to get to the door but I know there are people who have a more difficult time than I EVER will.

Aww good point. :)
I'm one of those people that give the glare when people look totally fine when they park at a handicap zone. I'll keep your message in mind next time before I give any looks.

Stupid...I know many people with MS who appear to be fine but aren't. They wouldn't be happy finding one of these.

Me too, it's worse the longer I'm walking and also if I don't have completely flat (sneakers or crocs) shoes on. If I remember correctly, MRI also showed early stages of stenosis. No fun. :ohwell:

Well, I agree that it wouldn't be nice to slam someone with one of these if they are genuinely in need of that spot. In that case, they can talk to the doctor and get a temporary or a permanent tag. This is usually for folks I have seen parking in that spot and running into the store!! I believe they have a "mentally handicapped" tag LOL. They should have a separate parking, maybe behind the store :convinced:
My wife has ACL injury but whenever I drop her into the store, I prefer to park in regular spot so someone more deserving can park in the handicapped spot.

They can be gotten for other than physical movement limitations. My sister has lupus and is severly restricted in the amount of sun she can be exposed to. Therefore she uses the handicap spots to get in and out without being in the sun.

But with MS, a person can "run" into the store and then not be fine on the way out. There are many other "diseases" and physical ailments which can do the same thing. The handicapped parking permit allows them to be close if they have a hard time walking out of the store.

Heh, this thread reminded me of http://yousuckatparking.com/. I used to slap these on cars at my college campus and then on cars in my apartment complex who double parked - although I had to hit cars in adjacent lots too so I was never found out LOL

Re: for those of you with pain/ailments

I just wanted to give the testimony for those of you who are suffering with ailments that it seems cannot be helped by "modern medicine." I am a chiropractor and recently had an older lady walk in to the office complaining of low back and neck pain. She has spinal stenosis diagnosed by MRI and an incredible curve in her spine which was causing a great deal of irritation to the nerves and muscles. She was told her ONLY option was surgery, and that had no guarantee of correcting the problem or relieving her pain, of course. Anyway, she could barely stand for 5 minutes and couldn't do dishes, vacuum, or any other activity that required leaning forward or bending. At her re-exam about one month into treatment, she had regained almost full range of motion, could vacuum and do all the dishes without stopping; at this point, about 4 months into treatment, I see her about once every 4-6 weeks, she rarely complains of pain except if she has had to sit for very long periods of time, and she hugs me and says "thank you" every time I see her.

Now, I'm not saying all people get the great results this lady did, but she is in her 80s and if worked for her, there is a good chance it could work for you. I see people who have had failed surgeries, spinal fusions, and many other attempts at addressing the "symptoms" without addressing the problem. Oh, and I'll say that most of our patients tell me that their whole life they told themselves that they would never see a chiropractor because of whatever reason. And I haven't had a patient yet that hasn't said something along the lines of, "I wish I would have tried this a long time ago...it would have saved a lot of money and a lot of pain..." Just my two-cents.

If you have questions about chiropractic feel free to PM me. I try to check my PMs often, but sometimes I go awhile. Lastly, please don't take what I have written as some ego-boost for myself...I am simply trying to inform about the benefits of chiropractic care. Any caring chiropractor could get similar results if the body is allowed to function as it was intended. I am nothing special.

I know of a few busy parking lots that have like 6 or 7 handicapped spots, and hardly anybody ever uses them. In those situations, it seems plausible that someone could park in one if they're just running in to the store for a minute. It's highly unlikely that 7 handicapped people are going to arrive in a minute or two. I think some spots should say "Handicapped or 2 minute parking." Worst case scenario is that a handicapped person would have to wait two minutes for someone to come back to their car. I'm specifically thinking of a Chinese food takeout place that has virtually no parking except for a few handicapped spots that are always empty.

I figure as long as someone has either a HC plate or placard then they must have a reason to have it and they should use the HC parking spaces if they need them, so it irks me to see someone without HC tags parked in a HC space. I'll totally use these post-its!

My hubby has a yellow pad that says PARKING VIOLATION big on the top and it goes on to tell the person that they've parked in a space big enough for a tent and an army. And that people like them should get stuck in traffic, in the rain, on their birthday. ... there's more to it too, it's funny. We just put one on a car yesterday for parking in two spaces.

(PS those bumper stickers are funny, but that's a bit much... I know I'd be totally pissed if I had someone put a bumper sticker on my car)

Sorry but there's never an excuse to use them if you do NOT need them. I don't even use the handicapped toilets...long line or not.

Gee... I always take up 2 spaces... our big van doesn't quite fit in one. I do park towards the back of the lots, though. I'd be really embarrassed to get one of those.
