Have you read "The Allegory of the Cave"???

Funny you mention it, we read that in school earlier this year and we did a whole outdoor reenactment activity. I didn't really get much of it, but it's not like I was paying attention.

Do you get the meaning of it?

Yep, but they don't mention how the 'enlightened' guy steps outside of the cave and gets eaten by a sabretooth tiger. I'll take my shadows and chains anyday.

I read it, and wrote about it :banghead: :banghead:

I dislike Philosophy a lot :(

The AotC is meant to show Plato's idea of the greater and lesser forms, the imaginables and the conceivables, etc.

Unfortunately I can't find what I wrote about (i do however still have stuff about the theories of the enduring self, skepticism, who and what you are (your mind, your body, or a combination), sense & knowlegde, & existance.)

I don't know if you've ever seen the drawing for the AotC, but it's usually divided up into four sections, each meant to represent one of the forms. (Higher and lower forms are each broken into two others)

THe shadows represent the lowest form, the chained prisoners represent the second lowest, the fire and the actual people casting the shadows represent the 3rd form (now into the higher forms), and the man who escapes the cave is shown in the sunlight is the Highest form.

There are a few ideas that you should understand. The fire in the cave is representative of our REAL sun, and the sun outside is representative not of the sun, but of extreme enlightenment.

Secondly, an idea that is brought up a lot is: what would happen if the man who escapes were to come back in the cave, and tell the other prisoners what he saw?

THey would not believe him, as they have lived their entire lives based on shadow and are esentially not ready to learn how things really are. It is speculated that the man who escapes is supposed to represent Socrates, plato's mentor. Keep in mind that Socrates received such enlightenment, and when he attempted to share with with his townsfolk (the prisoners in the AotC) they did not believe him, and they accused him of corrupting the youth, etc. and killed him.

now that i've rambled a lot.. uh.. just PM me if you need help?
