As a health care provider, first off, try and get your flu shot early! Secondly, steer clear of infectious areas, loaded with folks carrying around viruses...planes, malls, crowds (if you can). Most importantly WASH YOUR HANDS! Over seventy percent of colds are contracted by the individual themselves scratching their noses, wiping their eyes or mouth. Even when you go grocery shopping, carrying a packet of "wipes" in your pocket/purse and wipe the shopping cart handle before pushing it! Some stores now off the wipes at the front of the store for free.
Should you contract the cold virus, try and rest, drink fluids and yes, that means chicken soup broth noted for its vitamin and enzyme content, and treat the symptoms selectively. Don't OVER TREAT with over the counter medications. There is a debate raging in the medical community over cold medications and their value! Many over the counter medications conflict with prescription drugs, make folkd drowsy and dizzy. When in doubt talk to the Pharmacist, or your personal physician as to appropriate choices. Watch for any fever over a hundred degrees, stiff neck, headaches or blurred vision. All serious signs of more dangerous diseases bacterial related. Take that sick day off from work, snuggle down with water, tea, juices, eat lightly, and rest. The best course of action is prevention where possible. Most cold viruses last about a week.
Wishing you good health, not only now but in the upcoming New Year! Be well!
