That is an incredible drive. While the price per gig may be a bit high (except at this price), it has a performance all its own in the 7200rpm bracket.

But as drives keep getting larger, the seek times keep increasing. While the RPM may be decent, a 500GB 7200RPM will be faster than this drive.

a bit hight[?] at .25/gig?

... can no longer add to cart, only to wish list instead. available in store too no?

I would suggest that you call and be sure. But Im sure you know to let your fingers do the walking.

same avg seek time as seagate 500gb

I thought this was opposite. If large drive have same number of plates as small drive, higher capacity drive stores data more compact. So, the head of large drive travels less than small drive???

Guys, the average seek time will be about the same unless improvements have been made in the newer drives. The reason is that the platters are the same size, so it's going to take the same amount of time for the head to move into any one place on average. There is a "track-to-track" seek time for drives that I would expect to decrease in time, though, since the data density is higher.

I would also expect that the transfer rate for data would be higher as well, because of the higher density. (The same larger hard drive rotating at 7200 RPM would cover more data on a higher density drive.) Of course you need to check how many platters are in the drive to check this, though. Drives can use between 1 and 4 or 5 platters. A drive with 1 platter of 1GB should outperform a drive with 4 platters of 250MB as far as transfer rates are concerned. (Once you seek to the data, which should take about the same amount of time on average: as long as it is sequential, the 1GB platter will move over the data quicker.)

I should add a disclaimer that this is my understanding of the subject, and really, you should probably look it up if you are interested in the subject as I could be wrong.

... right

... "my understanding this, my understanding that, blah blah, etc." -- followed by "but i could be wrong, so you should probably look it up... " :claps:

in good humor, and with all due respect, either know and be correct & accurate... or simply :zip:, step aside, and let someone else be. "you should probably look it up..." despite it's popularity, and contrary to your refined experience and developing wisdom, is not: friendly, helpful, nor intelligent to suggest to anyone who asks [or doesn't ask] you a question.

feedback?

Well, my feeling is that unless you are a hard drive expert, which I doubt many (if any) on Spoofee are, your post should come with a disclaimer. If you can take me to task for incorrect information I can accept that, but don't take me to task for acknowledging that I'm not an expert even though I'm fairly certain I'm correct and have much more experience in this area than most Spoofee users. No one should trust any post in a forum and should always look up information. I can admit maybe it was unnecessary for me to point that out in my post, though.

Also, I'm actually fine with people giving their understanding of a situation. Nothing brings out more advanced users than proving to someone they are wrong. ;)

So my feeling is unless you can show that I'm wrong, then :zip: it. ;)

Not saying its not comparable, but its not the same drive. $322 is the best pricewatch shows on the Hitachi.
