FYI, these are really "IBM Deskstar" drives as Hitachi recently bought out the IBM hard drive division. They have outstanding customer support, and I highly recommend them. I previously had a 120GB drive go bad, and they replaced it no questions asked.

so far I've used Maxtor and IBM Deskstar... Both companies rock in the warranty. They will replace with a new HD no questions asked and usually have the replacement sent in 2 - 3days.

Both are great HD's.

Did you have to sent back the broken one? If so, who paid for the shipping?

I had to pay shipping costs back to them, and had to use "approved packaging" (they detail this on their website, but just keep your box as it will suffice). Yeah, it kinda sucked to have to pay for shipping to them, but ya can't have it all.

Warranty

I had a 40gig Western Digital go out about a year ago.

After a five minutes of making arrangements, I was able to have a new drive sent in advance, copy onto the new drive what was not lost to bad sectors, and send the old drive in the packaging from the new.

Total cost: One hour or so and about $4 in shipping.

I'm sold on WD now.
