Water Intoxication.

US woman dies after water contest
A Californian woman who took part in a water-drinking contest to win a video game system has died of water intoxication, tests have shown.
Jennifer Strange had taken part in the "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" game run by KDND 107.9 radio in Sacramento, which promised the winner a Nintendo Wii.
A work colleague said Ms Strange had reported her head was hurting hours after the contest and was going home.
Ms Strange, 28, was found dead on Friday at her house in Rancho Cordova.

Contestants were first given eight ounce (225 millilitre) bottles to drink every 15 minutes.

dont people have any sense, they aired a dateline or something several months ago about a fraternity hazing where a kid died in part after consuming too much water. it sounds rediculous but it can happen and you would think whomever had the contest would have made sure it was safe first.

It didn't happen in Florida?
I'm amazed!

Science lesson of the day.....when one consumes to much water there is a shift in the blood chemistry for electrolyte balance. When you "dilute" the important electrolytes like sodium, choloride, potassium etc, bodily functions suffer. In particular, brain functions. Thus that woman's first indication by her headache. No game, no contest, no amount of money would make me take a health risk. Sad in way..........:(

Too much of anything is bad. I wish people would remember that. :(

In this case, would it be too much water or too much greed?

I'm sorry to say that, but...well, natural selection was in place once again to make sure morons don't reproduce

too late, the news story says she's a mother

see, every time an article like this hits the world news, the opinion of the "average American" in the eyes of the rest of the world goes down even furher

I like Oprah... she encourages stupid people not to reproduce.

Will there be a test?

Seriously, this is horrible. She was probably a really good Mom and a big hearted person to try to win the Wii for her kids. The promoter's of this contest should be held accountable for the stunt. Most people dont know you can die of too much water.....

It's like saying that McDonald's and other fast food placed should be accountable for people's obesity. Everyone is responsible for him/herself. It's just the way it should be. Why are there morons who sue automobile makers for serious crash injuries while car flipping on the freeway after setting the gear to "park at 60 miles/hour??!!! BTW, don't ever try that. This country is already plaqued with frivolous lawsuits.

As one of my favorite radio personalities says, we should repeal all laws that protect stupid people. Then the gene pool will clean itself.

:amen: :claps:

I think saying this woman deserved to die because she was uneducated about water intoxication is pretty crappy. I wouldn't compare this to people getting obese from Mcdonald's. This radio station should be held accountable for having a contest like this. They encouraged it. :mmph:

Sterilization works well for this dilemma!

I encourage people to jump off the Empire State building without a parachute. Whoever survives, I promise to send 10 free Wii systems... :bitter:

......go ahead, make me accountable

You see how ridiculous this is?!

I don't think she was dumb. She placed second. Water contests are pretty common.

What surprises me is the amount of water you can safely drink. If you have two kidneys, that is just .39gal/hour. If you don't eat enough salt, you reach a toxic level at just .49 gal/hr.
