ok, people have their own driving habit.. how do you drive it?

a friend of mine likes to shift to neutral when he is gliding. is it the right way to do it?

also, he likes to put in gear when waiting for red light..

I don't believe I do either of those things. Never really thought about it

Anything that saves wear-n-tear on your clutch, the better. I drive an automatic now, easier on the arthritis. I was never good w/a manual. Want to try some fun, try a 3-speed on the column. I liked to never learned how to drive that thing.

I drive auto, I have a habit of putting it into neutral when I brake or waiting at the light.

The right way? who knows. but this is the way I do it, and the way everyone I know does- Ok, it's only 3 people I know that drive manual, and they all do it that way too.

We drive a manual. That's what I learned on and feel most comfortable with. I feel as though I have more control over the car in the snow then with an automatic. As for driving habits...sometimes I will coast in neutral, I usually have it in gear at a red light but if it is really long I will take it out of gear. In my opinion everyone should know how to drive a stick. You never know when you will be faced with a situation where you MUST drive one.

Depends. If on downward slope, I would put in gear so to use engine brake, a lot safer. But if approaching red light for example, which I do all the time, is fine, and that would save some gas if done religiously.

That should be fine, plus he gets some exercises on his left foot ;) Make sure he presses the clutch pedal all the way, if not he's wearing his clutch. I usually put in normal gear, don't want to get arthritis soon ;)

Also, on red light, people tend to keep distance to car in front of them. If the light is not green yet, why move? Ignore the distance, even if it's 2-3 car length, it's still red anyway. This saves gas too. That's what I do... I always drive manual since, in my opinion, automatic is too boring, more expensive on maintenance and repair, and slower.

I've always owned a manual.. and I typically leave it in gear when coming up to a red light - letting it do the whole engine breaking thing - or i downshift if I expect the light to turn by the time I get up to it.

At the light, i don't leave the car in gear in fear of wearing out the clutch if I don't have my left foot down all the way.. plus i don't really need the extra work out on my left leg ;)

I sometimes drive a big grain truck for some people, and I push the clutch in to take it out of gear, but then jam it in w/o the clutch

i love doing nuetral drops in an automatic cuz you get glued to the back of your seat. My dad tows cars for a living and if i go with him and we have to bring it back to the garage i beat the hell out of the cars and i have found that nuetral drops are fun for long distances but for a short distance and lots of smoke use the ebrake if it is a front wheel drive and jam it in first and punch the gas or punch it in 2nd real quick. If it's a back wheel drive just do the brake and gas. I love doing this so much i tried it on a back wheel drive automatic lincoln with an 8 cylinder and i popped both back tires before i was done.

I guess that's why your dad tows cars (all the cars you ruin). ;)

BTW also remind me not to buy a car from you.

I prefer both types of cars, each has its reason. Better control & gas mileage with manual for example. But with a lady in the car, automatic is better cause you don't have that knob in betwixt her legs & you can put your arm on her shoulder.

you can ask the lady to shift for you.

Why would she have that knob between her legs? What car is that? Also, why would a stick shift interfere with you putting your arm on her shoulder? I guess we're talking about them European cars..... :car:

manual is sooo much fun!! i enjoy it alot.. my boyfriend would hold my hand with his right hand, and shift gears with his left.. a little uncomfortable for him.. but he really doesn't mind.. =0)

If you have bench seats & a pretty lady, the lady sits next to you & often that is just where your shifter is located. You shift & it goes betwixt her legs.

Any guy worth his salt & with a pretty lady would have bench seats & an automatic :-)

Btw, one should not use neutral & coast on slopes. Not worth the risk.

I learned and drove manuals for most of my driving life untill just recently when I met my husband. I realized letting him drive my car, was sort of ruining it. I finally switched over to driving an automatic... my first week of driving the new car I felt sort of odd and a little like I had betrayed my best bud for something that wasn't as much work .

The really funny thing is when you are driving an automatic and are used to a manual...when you go for the clutch it is quite the shock as the car slams to a stop. LOL LOL LOL I have done that a couple times.

That's funny... I'm a die hard emergency brake user.....mine is on the floor. So when I drive my hubby's car (he has a hand brake), after I park the car I find myself stomping my left foot.....

I also find myself waving my right hand around....(the shifts are in different places as well):p
