How To Get 10-30% Off @ Gap, Staples, Abercrombie + Anywhere

eBay has auctions for gift certificates for almost any popular clothing store or any store in general (bestbuy, amazon, staples, etc.). Usually the higher priced gift certificates give you a better saving ratio.

1. Click here to go to eBay.
2. Search for [store name] gift card and you should find some gift certificates for a good price. Make sure you are buying from someone with good feedback.

I have been on the other end of this deal. When I purchased my Roomba (well, all 3 of them, it was christmas and they were gifts) from Sharper Image they sent me a $25 gift certificate. I didnt plan to buy from them again in the near future so I ebay'd the GC and got $15 for it. A good deal for me, and a good deal for whoever got the GC since they were obviously planning to make a purchase.

savings on these are hit or miss... however, ebay is good for finding gift certificates on restaurants or hotels...

I used ebay this past Christmas to buy 3 Pottery Barn cards as presents. On all my bids I made sure I got at least 25% off. I'm surprised nobody hasn't posted this tip before.

3,000 threads in the hot deals forum. Is this a big accomplishment? :D

almost as big as your personal upcoming 1000th post :)

I was the seller once, I had received a GC for a store I really just don't like since everything cost a fortune. On a good I looked up past auctions on ebay and saw folks buying/selling gift cards, so I sold it... they got a decent deal, and I got cash. If you get a GC from a store you don't like but don't want to hurt anyone's feelings by telling the gover that you don't like the store, you can get a fair bit of cash for the GC to buy whatever you want whereever you want :D

Always check their feedback first (make sure they have sold before & that they have a good rating (high percentage).. you want to protect yourself as best you can) Also, use paypal if you can... it has buyer protection (as well as seller protection).

Check for coupons too... you might buy a gift card for home depot and save 20% but then you can buy a coupon & save an additional 10%... just a suggestion!

I have sold quite a few gift cards on ebay. Most recent was $25 Barnes and Noble card which went for $21. I offered free shipping since it only cost one stamp to send it. The ebay listing fees were 20 cents because I did it on their 50% off day. The paypal fees were about 80 cents and the final value ebay fee was like 30 cents. So I got about $18 after all was said and done for an easy auction and something I did not pay for.

What surprises me is that I sometimes see target gift cards for a few cents over their actual value. I have no idea why.

Buyer beware. I purchased two iTunes gift certificates on ebay before and I lost both of them because the sellers got them with stolen credit cards. The value of the certificates were $75 and $50 (I only paid $0.60 for every $1.00) and after a couple of months went by (I only redeemed about $15.00 worth of songs) the value disappeared from my iTunes account. I contacted iTunes and they told me that the credit card company contaced them and told them that it was purchased with stolen credit card. At that time, both sellers had positive ratings and I did use PayPal for them. However, since the gift certificate codes were emailed to me and there was no physicial item, it was not cover under their buyer protection. And those two eBay sellers are no longer eBay members (or they open another account).

Just my experience buying gift certificates on ebay.

I could definitely see the potential pitfalls with digital gift certificates. When i sell a physical gift card, I always keep the gc number and advertise if it has an unrevealed pin number.

certain target gift cards are more than their value because of the ACTUAL CARD,
ie:some are like really rare, themed, hologram, etc. Go figure
ie ie: a tickle me elmo target gift card for 25 dollars might sell for 30 40 50 :P depending on if its christmas

as someone who works in retail, i would just ask that if you buy on ebay, please buy only gift cards and not cards for store credit. buying store credit in some cases is just giving crooks more incentive to steal. (pick up something in the store that they didn't pay for and return it for store credit)

also beware that store credit can have stipulations that a regular gift card does not. for example, store credit from my company is not usable online, but a regular gift card is.

Worked for me

I got $1000 worth of Fry's Electronics gift certificates for $700 on eBay. And bought a great massaging recliner that was on clearance.

They were paper certificates, which made me a little leery. I got the seller to agree to go through Escrow.com for the transfer.

I got the certificates, went to the store and bought the item with them, and then approved the Escrow.com transfer.

I had the store look up the history on the certificates. The seller was the original buyer. He bought with his Fry's credit card.

I've seen CompUSA gift cards on eBay too. I think these high dollar certifcates may be young kids who need money and apply for the store credit card and spend their limit on GC's to sell. It's like a loan with a high interest rate. But, truthfully, a 20-30% loan fee over a long time may be better than a 15 day payday loan at 900%.

I have been buying Ebay gift certificates/cards for years. Sometimes I get too excited and only get $1-2 "free." Sometimes I have done well, getting $10+ extra "free" for a $50 gift card, thus paying $40 or less. BUT.... just like some of the others, I have got scammed even when buying from sellers with positive ratings and always more than 10 positive. I bought a Toys R Us gift card and when I went to use it, there was no balance. Luckily in this case, I emailed the seller and told him there was nothing on it. I called Toys R Us and they said that the amount was spent the day before the auction even closed. I told the seller this who also called R Us. Apparently, someone contacted them to "check the balance" of the card before they bid and the nieve seller gave the gift card number and this person, used it on the internet and poof! no $ left. The seller was nice enough to refund. I had another incident from someone else who sold me a Kohls G.C. which was supposed to have $15 on it but when I went to use it there was $2 on it. Amazing that this seller magically disappeared. So..... reality is that you never know what you are going to get and who you are buying from. Be careful and only buy from sellers with REALLY good histories.

more warnings on feedback

Be sure to check not just the seller's feedback score, but the feedback itself and the seller's current auctions for a pattern.
Warning signs:
  • All feedback is from buying rather than selling,
  • All feedback is recent, or
  • Selle has a good variety of feedback but it's all from buying and selling small-ticket items unrelated to his current $8,000 worth of gift cards from various stores spread over 40 different auctions. Expect this seller to mysteriously disappear, ripping off 40 different buyers at once.
Ask me how I know.
On second thought, please don't ask.

Im gonna check this out cuz i was a little hesitant to do gift cards over ebay...does them showing a receipt add any security to bidding?

Makes me wonder why they don't just cash them in at the store. Some states require that a store turn them into cash if asked to.
