Hi everyone,

I just have a quick question about Nicorette patch/gum... Does it really work, and how hard is it to quit when using this when a person smokes about 12-17 cigs a day. This is because I want to give this to a friend as a parting gift since I'm leaving college now, but would like to know the effectiveness of this and how much motivation would be needed in order to quit.

If it's too hard, I'm not sure if my friend here could quit and might make this attempt fruitless.

Thanks.

I & many others I've spoken to find the Nicorette Lozenge to be much more effective (as it's newer, there are no store brands).

I don't know anyone who quit from these products. I know many who would fit this description:
From heavy, down to 1-2 smokes a day (like one with evening drink).
Overall addiction transferred from cig to long term use of replacement product.

Benefit is Nicotine without the tar & harmful additives in cigs. In fact, many medical studies show varied Nicotine benefits. Nicotene without the other harmful additives has never been proven to be unsafe EXCEPT in high doses.

Hi spikyhead3,

First of all, i have to commend you for being such a caring friend. i don't think it's ever fruitless to try to help a friend be more healthy. :claps:

scientific studies indidate that nicotine replacement therapy is safe & effective. however, unless your friend tries the patch, gum or lozenge form of nicotine substitute, it's uncertain if it would work or not.

best wishes! =)

neither the gum nor the patch helped me quit. the best has been cold turkey, plenty of aspirins and some exercise. too bad eating is my new disorder...

cold turkey was the only way my guy and I quit, it's been over year for him. For me the only thing the gum was good for were long plane flights or when I saw my family that didn't know I smoked. Over 12 hours with the gum I wanted to smoke.

A friend even bought me those tobacco free cigarettes that have flavors, oh was that stuff ever bad.

right, thats what happened to me. patches were the same.

my question is, who stopped smoking and maintained their weight?
it seems like quiting was the easy part. hard part is controlling what you do instead of smoking...

although nicotine addiction is a biological dependency, i also think there's a mental addiction syndrome too... a sort of OCD thingy-- which explains why some people are more prone to addiction than others. at any rate, i've found that when i don't exercise on a VERY regular basis, i drink on a VERY regular basis :34: ... i think for some people it's more a matter of finding something to do... i'm just glad i found distance running... some people like to scrapbook (which i find particularly boring)... whatever it is, i'm sure you can find something to keep you busy... GOOD for all of you that quit smoking and GOOD LUCK in your healthier futures!! :bigok: :) :)

I stayed the same weight and my guy lost weight.

Does it have to be stopping cold-turkey? Or can quitting be like regimenting a lesser portion as weeks go on?

nicorette gum/patch

I smoked a pack a day for 20 years and have successfully quit with the Nicorette Patch. I carry the Nicorette gum with me in case of extreme withdrawals;however, in a month, I have only chewed about 5 pieces. Both the patch and gum work provided the quitter is truly ready to quit:)
