My wife and I once wanted to read "A Painted House" by John Grisham at the same time.
Since we have been married long enough to not gracously let the other go first nor fight over it we decided to read it back and forth, chapter by chapter. I was an enjoyable exprerience. Enough so that we have since read all the Harry Potter books the same way. We are now ready for the next Harry Potter book but Rowling doesn't seem accommodating (plus I recently read that "at least" two characters will die in the next book which means it will even be darker than the last) so we need some suggestions.
I told my wife that maybe the Spoofee Community might be able to help. That was a mild mistake because I then had to explain what that meant. Regardless;

Does anyone (or everyone) have a suggestion as to what we might read to each other? The point being that the book not only has to be good but it has to be able to be good orally. As an example I can imagine reading the Hobbit together but not the Lord of the Rings.

Jerry P. I'll give you a few that I have enjoyed alot. BTW I am also on the edge of my seat about who is going to die in the next H.P.

Angels and Demons - Dan Brown - The story before the Da Vinci Code, it's better if you haven't read the Da Vinci Code yet but great book either way.

The Da Vinci Code - Dan Brown - I get tired of all the speculation about the book that stupid people believe it's real but it an amazing edge of your seat thrill ride. One of the best books I ever read.

Eragon - Christopher Paolini - Think Lord of the Rings for a Harry Potter audience. Great book and the sequel is on my list of books to read.

A Rumor of War - Phillip Caputo - A first hand account of the Vietnam War, a few chapters are a little graphic but it will open your eyes to what it was really like. Unless you have relatives and such telling you their stories.

The Amulet of Samarkand - Jonothan Straud - A book very much like H.P., about a young magician who summons a 10000 year old djinni named Bartamaeus who helps him unwillfully throughout the whole book. The djinni is hillarious in this book b/c he hates the kid but is bound by the spell to do his bidding.

Those are a few I have enjoyed recently, if you go to amazon you can read about 10 Pages or so of these books online. Kind of like a teaser. Hope you end up reading one!!:)

Thank you Amanda Hump. The djinni one sounds like it might work. Loved Angels & Demons even more than Da Vinci. You surely would enjoy Deception Point by Brown too.

For all of you non-readers - you just don't know how to "read". When things get a little boring the person not reading starts "distracting" the reader which can also be oral but but not verbal  :clown:

Anyone else? I'm making a list to get the best shipping deal (if I don't just get the books used).

Any time, I haven't finished Angels and Demons yet, I am about 2/3rds of the way through. It's an awesome book, it just hasn't gripped me like the Da Vinci code did which I read in like 3 days. That never happend before and hasn't ever happend since.

I hear the movie is being planned already. I guess after the sucess of DaVinci it's a no-brainer. Same thing for X-men 4

I don't know if you like Koontz or not but The Taking is a great read.

I just got back from vacation and grabbed this book before boarding the plane. If you like mystery/suspense/ fiction crime novels this book is proving to be VERY good.

Dean Koontz - Velocity.
This is a hard to put down read. Poses some morally challenging decisions and the main character is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. The main character finds a note on his windshield after he gets off of work...

"If you take this note to the police and get them involved, I will kill a lovely blond schoolteacher somewhere in Napa County.

If you don't take this note to the police, I will instead kill an elderly woman active in charity work.

You have six hours to decide. The choice is yours."

He continues to receive the same types of notes after the crime(s) have been committed.

Velocity is the next book on my list. I usualy read in the pool but I don't think I want to take that one in there.

Why not butty?? Are you worried that you might get a little scared and make a little lemonade??:34:

A little lemonade never hurt noone...I don't want to ruin the book.

Taming of the Shrew - Shakespeare

I read this out loud to my girlfriend once. Its fun, because you can dramatize it so easily.

Shakespeare? For real? I once tried Hamlet and quickly stopped. It was like a foreign language. None of the classics that immediately come to mind would work. I liked Tale of Two Cities, A Tree Grown In Brooklyn, African Queen (might work) but not to read back and forth. It has to be a "fun" book and I have a hard time believing WS (maybe Wilber Smith but his are a little too tragic ) is "fun" but I'll look into it Squid. Koontz is way too scary like King. James Patterson might work if I could identify one of his like "When the Wind Blows" and the next. I know he has a new one but he even says the characters are the same names but similar (kinda weird). Maybe my wife would like Dehawks suggestion but I'm not sure he means Playboy or pinball. Pinball doesn't sound like a fun game in bed.

the night i fell for hubby, he read me a "kid's book"- called east of the sun, west of the moon ... voices and all- it was wonderful. if you want a book for just one night, i'd highly recommend it.

For one night Id suggest, Jonathan Livingston Seagull, The Little Prince, The Giving Tree, Hope for the Flowers. Hope for the Flowers is SO good.

But Im telling you. Shakespeare is fun. The Tempest and The Taming of the Shrew are awesome. Although I guess you have to understand it. Hamlet is pretty dark and heady, I dont promote that one as 'fun'. The Taming of the Shrew is actually pretty damn funny.
