There was a dance program this year at schools throughout NYC participated in. It was a fantastic program where dance teachers actually came into the school and encouraged/taught the children to dance classic dances (boys & girls). As the program progressed, a select number of students were allowed to continue into the 'completition phase'..... In order to participate, they competed against each other, had to have their grades up and make all the 'practices' (getting to school 20 minutes earlier each day. The whole group really worked hard and their general attitude, grades and skills improved tremendously.

I really feel our team was exceptional. I have a history in 'dance' and can recognize real 'talent'. I was critical of their performances and saw here or there where it could have been 'better', but keep in mind, these are young children, not professionals and they were extremely good for their age.

So we go against other schools in this program and end up at the finals.......our team comes in last, which on it's own is a great accomplishment in itself. The first place team however, in my opinion, and others as well, did not clearly dance as well.....and they were minority, obviously not from a 'well to do neighborhood' and their 'supporters' were very 'boisterous'.

So here's the deal......it was obvious that they were chosen to be first for reasons not solely based on their dance performance alone. *let's not debate that issue, just accept it for the sake of accepting it, they weren't the "best" of all the groups*

So was it fair?

*I'll leave it at that right now because there were comments made by our relatives which I do not agree with, but I'll leave that for later... *

Honestly theres no way to tell. Especially since none of us was there; but even if I were there, I would have no idea if they were judged fairly or not. Only the judges know for sure.

Isn't it remarkable that children will indeed perform and achieve during competition! Love to see their progress, as long as there are not nutty coaches or slave driver parents mucking up the real reason why they are there in the first place! Dance is a wonderful art form. :)

Why were you "critical?" As long as they were learning, having fun, and, demonstrating good sportsmanship, and not being groomed to be on "Dancing With The Stars" then, chill out and enjoy their antics! :) I love to see young kids learning to dance! Especially little boys.....:claps:

Why did you feel it pertinent to stress that the winning team was a "minority?" Are you saying that minorities shouldn't place first? Who was judging the kids, were the judges minorities too and therefor "were prejudice in their scoring?" Did someone threaten them with switchblades, or hire a contract against other teams?!? Again, you are right Preco.....it all comes down to opinions.

So here's the deal......it was obvious that they were chosen to be first for reasons not solely based on their dance performance alone. *let's not debate that issue, just accept it for the sake of accepting it, they weren't the "best" of all the groups*

By who's determination and who precisely was it obvious to? Did the other parents bark and complain, and, ask for a recount of scoring? Was the judging based only on dance skills and no other parameters? If you didn't want us to "debate the issue" then why post a question? Why not just say "I feel our team was the best and I want you all to agree with me because I am Preco!"

So was it fair?

I wasn't there so how can I proffer an honest analysis if it was fair? Lets all just hope that the children had a great time, the over zealous adults kept their big fat mouths shut, and, that the age old dilema of racism was not displayed. Sheesh. There is enough of crap going on in the world than to add fuel to the fire at a dance competition. Let's all hope that such behavior is not contained within the gene pool frequency, and, passed on to future generations. Remember, children will live, what they learn. Preco, just continue to give your babies a strong support system and the good guidance that you have given them. It will last longer in the long run, when this kind of nonsense is long over with. And, of course, dance with them around the house and just have fun! Life is to short not to skip and dance! :yo:

You sure my Polish relatives didn't show up at that Dance Recital?!?! :wave

Is this the competition are talking about? Break dancing is considered a classic dance isn't it? Is that you I see in the back Preco? LOL

But to answer you question, I would have to say...

Ummm

No stage Moms/Dads there or fanatical coaches. Supportive parents and dedicated instructors.

I really feel our team was exceptional. I have a history in 'dance' and can recognize real 'talent'. When I said 'critical', I meant my training and background, I can recognize when there is a mis-step or error. I did not bring this to the attention of the children, just an observation. I enjoyed watching ALL the children dance and I think this program was a benefit to ALL, but that is NOT the issue or point that I am raising.
So we go against other schools in this program and end up at the finals.......our team comes in last, which on it's own is a great accomplishment in itself. It was pertinent because their dancing skills were not up to par. There was obviously more to judging this competition than dancing skills. I don't care what color or background anyone is, but if all things being equal and the skill is not there, one must look toward the obvious differences.

So here's the deal......it was obvious that they were chosen to be first for reasons not solely based on their dance performance alone. *let's not debate that issue, just accept it for the sake of accepting it, they weren't the "best" of all the groups*

No where did I say that our team was the best, you made that assumption  but they certainly weren't the worst and the first place absolutely weren't' the "best" by any measure of the scale. As I said, "they were chosen to be first for reasons not solely based on their dance performance alone. *let's not debate that issue, just accept it for the sake of accepting it, they weren't the "best" of all the groups"

Obviously you weren't there as you are making obvious biggotted pre-judged assumptions, as I stated, let's us not debate that and accept the premise that they weren't the best. Stop interjecting your own made up nonsense. This has nothing to do about me nor any 'action' that I am taking. I am asking a question based on the presumed 'facts'....that's what I am asking. Is it fair? Is it fair that a team who is obviously not the most 'talented' and who made more 'mistakes' to take first prize when the only differences other than that are socio-economics? What message is being sent to whom?? That is the question! Not why did Preco's precious talented protégé not win!! Or did that concept escape you?

what was the judging criteria?

or didn't they specify...

It supposedly was on dancing skills and presentation which the 'first prize-ers' really weren't the 'best' of the group, not by a long shot.

If it were based on 'who showed the most improvement', etc...then it's another story....but supposedly it was based on competition performance.:noidea:

Ya know Choo, I was doing the worm and transitioning into the head spin when I took that header down the flight of stairs......Ouch!

No concept escapes me Preco. You asked "Is it fair" and I gave you the reasons and thoughts that came to mind. I merely answered, "I wasn't there". Your own insecurities are showing here, and, attacking me sure isn't hiding them. I never said a word about proteges, nor did I even allude that you were a stage mother. As a matter of fact, I complemented your parenting style. Why is that you state that I "was obviously not there" when you stated none of the same to other spoofee members?!? I stated that I wasn't there, and, my answer reflected that.

Let's face it Preco, you are a nothing more than a cyber bully that will attack anyone's opinons that dare to challenge you on this forum. Well, sorry, I am not an easy bully push over. You posted, I answered truthfully, and, you remain a racist biggot to even allude that a minority didn't deserve to win just puts your hateful colors flying. And people complain about the SOUTH being racist. Hey, let them take a trip to your house. Get over yourself.

I would of helped you Preco but I was moonwalking.

Rockit by Herbie Hancock - that was the jam back in the day.

a lot of competitions are based upon audience approval. That's the way we do things in America nowadays. Does the winner of "Dancing w the Stars" always dance best? Or the biggest loser... is it the one who loses the most weight?

I've been in some *ahem* competitions in which I should have placed higher, but because I didn't bring a cheering section, I didn't do well. That's not to say I should've won, as I'm not that arrogant. (a little, maybe, but not overly so!).. Audiences can sway judges... it's just a fact...

at any rate, life isn't fair, precocious. sometimes we have to suck it up and just make the lemonade a little stronger

I think a lot escapes you................and you project your own made up nonsense at attacking people. There is no sense in discussing things with a closed mind who obviously has major issues of their own.
