Hi guys,

I wanted to give you a heads up on reposting. As of now, we will lock threads that are reposts; refering to the original thread. However, if the original thread is no longer active, as of a couple of months, we will merge the threads.

I would still like to thank people that are contributing to the freebies section, but please do a search before you post or else it might be subject to a locked thread.

If there are any questions, please PM me or any other moderator.:proud:

Another announcement:

repeated reposting, after initial warning will result in a ban. Please refrain from doing so.

I opened this thread allowing members to ask questions. I realized there might be issues that members have regarding this rule and other comments. Please direct them here. Also, please realize that this rule is to help keep the freebies section and the forums running smoothly. If there are changes that need to be made, they can. Thank you!

I also would like to add something here for everyone. ;)

Would you rather:

have the repost locked and a link posted to the original post?

or

have the repost move/merged into the original post, hence bumping up the old post?

There is a problem with reposts that needs to be addressed. There are some members who seem to repost more than others, please do not mention names here because we as mods know who they are. We know that members are complaining that the search feature does not work properly, I personally have never had any troubles though but that is just me. Usually it seems like a spelling error or searching for the wrong word.

It only takes a few seconds to search and then bump up the old post, if needed. SO JUST DO IT! LOL

Merged.......

For the member who legitimately 'searches' unfruitfully......locking his post is a 'deterrent' to looking for more deals.

If his post is merged......he may become better at 'searching'...and not discouraged.

If this certain poster just starts threads without an attempt of an obvious search......(ask him what words he used and see what comes up), then by all means start issuing infractions that will eventually 'add up'. JMHO

Having a thread 'locked' is very discouraging to the truly enthusiastic member looking to post a deal......I would think we would want to encourage members to bring new deals here...not smack them down.

Maybe you could adjust the search to show results on "ANY" word found. An example, if you search the following "Pet Safety Pack from the ASPCA " you will get a hit on a post by Joyce posted on 6/6. However, if you search "Pet Safety Pack from the ASPCA7" it will show NO matches. If you adjusted the search to hit on EACH word instead of a complete match I think your repost problem would greatly diminish. As it is presently, you need an exact match or it is best to search only a few words. Could you set up a link search? Then people could search the link and see if it was posted. An exact match would work for links

Why would you want to type all that in for a search? If you just type "Pet Safety Pack" it would show them all. I believe the search function is a keyword search, not a whole string search. Just typing the main keywords works well. :)

Exactly! :claps: That's what I just did to bump it. ;)

Search has always worked fine for me, once I learned to use it properly. I generally only use one or two words from the item title. Searching for the exact title doesn't work sometimes because not everyone lists the entire title when they post. You definitely get more results with only a word or two. Yes, that means more posts to look thru. But, it also saves others a lot of time by not having to open the link and possibly enter info, only to get a duplicate entry message.

It makes no difference to me whether the post is merged or the thread locked. Although, I do think the locked threads got the attention of more people. Whatever is easiest for the mods to do or keep track of works for me.

I agree 100%. Well said. :claps: I know I always search before posting and most of the time it works, but I've learned to look for just one word -- whatever I think would be the key/constant in any similar threads created w/the same item. I'm guessing that a lot of people aren't doing that. One thing I do like (tho it can make the search results longer) is that the search feature will not only search thread topics but also text, so if the OP doesn't include enough info in the title, you can still find a thread.

Why would you want to type all that in for a search? If you just type "Pet Safety Pack" it would show them all. I believe the search function is a keyword search, not a whole string search. Just typing the main keywords works well. :)

not only that, but in the 'string' glitterdog posted, per her recommendation, you'd not only get Pet, Safety, Pack, ASPCA, etc.. but you'd get any other unnecessary words such as "FROM" -- that would bring up an innumerable amt. of posts -- prob. too many to search thru. Same thing with "and", "or", etc. One of the best reasons to do a "KEY WORD" search instead. You could always just do a search for "ASPCA" or "PET" and still get less results than if you searched that whole sentence.

I do a thourough advance search on every post and still sometimes end up with a repost. I generally search the product name, and then the company as well and the key words one at at time. There have been several times that I have caught it myself and deleted my post, and other times that other members would be polite enough to point it out to me so that I can remove it. I think no matter what there will be a problem with repost because of little things like mispelling, our the way the original title is wrote out. There are cases though when you can tell that no effort was made to do a search first....I also wanted to know what the best way to report a repost is. Is it best to just add to the thread that it is a repost which is what I was doing, or is it best to click on the report post button and report it as a repost. This is what I have been doing lately but I don't want the mods to get frustrated with all the reports. Wanna do whatever makes the mods happy!

Happens to me too, I just usually delete the post when I catch it!

My point is lately there has been alot of reposts of stuff where the original post was still on front page still and it is apparent that there was no attempt to even do a search at all!

I think that a lot of the reposts could be cut down if posters would include both the product name and the company in the title, and any other releavant info that someone might use when searching. That is a big cause of a lot of my reposts. The more info in the title the easier it would be to get better search results using main keywords.

I thought this was a sticky post?

It's sticky now. Not sure why it went unsticky.

Yes, since I am one of the guilty of the repost's. :ignore: I have tried different ways to search, such as capitols, using the hyphens and spaces so forth...

I feel if it is new link, it should be claimed as the one who posted the new link. Probably because I am thrilled to find something from the get go.

Also you have pm the orginial post holder and they have not bothered to edit there post or update it. If you bump the post all it really does is bring to the front of the line. And personally I see it as post that has already had a lot of views towards it. I am not going to look at the "last post".

All comments and suggestions are more than welcome to pm me. (I do answer).:proud:
