Kingston 2GB PC2-5300 DDR2 SODIMM Memory for $14.99 Shipped After Rebate

I have a dell inspirion 1501 and the guide says that although it can take a total of 2gb of ram, only at most 1gb of ram can be in each slot. I have two slots.

so I'm wondering if I buy this and replace my two 512mb for this one piece 2gb, if it will function and if the laptop will still treat it as a 2gb ram even though the other slot is empty.

Any clues?
 
After hearing that a major rebate company applied for Bankruptcy, I want to stay away from Huge rebate offers. Buyers be aware. I have a compaq and I installed a 2 GB in one slot and it worked.
