The Phoenix executed a successful landing yesterday, and sent back the following picture from its new home base.

:claps: I certainly hope though they find more interesting things to take pictures then that LOL kind of some boring scenery there!!!!

that's true. You could get similar shot from Arizona or Utah

more like something arctic -- the patterns on the ground are more typical of a long frozen environment. if only there were a geologist among the spoofee members who could enlighten us ...

The lander is near the Martian north pole, it probably is pretty cold. The mission is looking for water ice.

They're collecting samples of the permafrost (as you mention, those same polygonal cracks exist in the Earth's permafrost too). They want to drill into the ice and look at the layering, degree of compaction, changes in chemical composition with depth, etc. to see where the water ice came from --- ancient ocean that froze? glacier? water vapor? The big *hope* is that it will tell us whether life (or at least the ideal conditions) for life, once existed on Mars.

The comment about Arizona wasn't too far off in one sense --- in technical terms, polar ice caps are considered to be a type of desert (low liquid water/rainfall and low biodiversity) --- odd as it may seem, temperature alone doesn't define a desert.

Wait a minute...

I recognize that rock on the right as the same one that is in all the Apollo moon landing photos!

Those darn MIBs strike again!

I was under the impression that we are after next energy resources, war zones, and dumping sites. May be global warming is big now, so we are in need of ice water.

Actually there is evidence of the Martian ice cap receding. Apparently they drive SUVs too.

Squirrels have not been shown to contribute to climate change.

Elementary Watson, Elementary
Based on the previous photo, only squirrels lives there in MArs, and Mars ICE caps are melting.

Oh, so the Martian climate change is caused by giant SUV driving Martian squirrels!

Makes as much sense as some of the other claims I've heard.

lol cute pic Dan! LOL
