Am I the only one having problems with the links to the deals? Everytime I click on one I get "The connection was refused when attempting to contact <insert domain>". So, for example, when I click the Maxtor 80 gb hard drive deal, I get that with click.linksynergy.com in place of the domain. It's happening with most of the links on the site. I'm using Mozilla 1.6 on Win2k. I've tried using IE 5.5 but I get similary results (I get an error page instead of a little alert window).

Hi Lordjedi,
You can currently fix this by following these instructions.

1) Click the start button | search | for files or folders
2) Type in hosts"
3) A file called HOSTS should be found
4) When you open it in Word (or whatever word processor you have), you should see a really long list of urls.
5) Delete the lines with click.linksynergy.com (there may be multiple copies)
6) Save the HOSTS file
7) Close your browser and try clicking the coupon link again.

I will try to create a program this week so users don't have to follow these steps. Thanks and let me know if it's still not working. I will do some research.

Yay! Thanks for the tip! Sure enough, that did the trick.

It's really funny, because I've never had a problem with the LinkSynergy links at all. Many people do though, if you need help with the program even though I don't know much Spoofee, let me know.

These are due to the installation to P2P softwares such as Kazaa Lite, they tend to block out all ad services hence linsynergy does not work.

Bump!

Still good info

Spoofee's steps do not help me. There was no folder or file named Host that showed up on a search and a p2p has not been used on this comp since before this year sometime and it has been reformatted since then. I am using Win ME, maybe that will mean something. I have the link problem in netscape and explorer.

Thanks
Gabriel

Spywares can also exist in the Windows HKEY registry???

Damn ad spywares (especially from DoubleClick.com)...The best way to get rid of these spyware is to eliminate them with Spybot's Search & Destroy as Spoofee suggested. I would recommend also to clean up your Windows system registry with this tool also. Most ad sites tend to hide their browser cookies in both cryptive directory structures and the Windows registry. Damn you Mr. Bill Gates...:banghead:

BTW, the HOSTS file is located by default under the directory C:\I386\HOSTS for Windows NT/2k/XP and is what Microsoft used to configure network IP address mappings to hostnames. I would not advise editing this file if you're not comfortable technically since this can really screw up your network settings.

This coming from an experienced Web Monkey Wannabee, affiliated with both black and white hacker crews and a part-time consultant specialized in web technologies and distributed computing...

Let me know if you need help Spoof.

Correction, the HOSTS file that is actually used by Windows on startup to determine IP mappings is located in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC folder. The I386 folder is the folder that is created upon installing Windows in which all of the Windows system files are copied to (from the CD to the hard drive).

I Have Tried Everthing List None Of Which Works Still Cannot Connect To Site

OK - I think you can get rid of this sticky.

Do you think that anybody is still using IE 5.5 or Mozilla 1.6 on Win2k???:noidea:

You would be surprised how many people still like the old stuff.
