Anyone know any screaming deals (under $50) out there for a cable router (min 2 port)

thanks

Router alternative

Instead of buying a router, you could do something else ... especially if you got down on that Staples deal w/the switch and the two ethernet cards. We just got a cable modem and have two computers here so in order to get both of them working off the one cable modem you simply ...

1) put two ethernet cards in one, one in all the others you wish to have connected
2) run the cable modem into the computer w/two NIC cards and then run the other NIC card out to the switch/hub
3) you can then run other computers into the switch/hub and set up a network on the computer the modem feeds into

Maybe that's more complex then you wanted to get, but it didn't cost me a dime since I used that Staples deal.

thanks Trevor,

I would like to do this but I thought that I needed to instal Wingate software or the like, and it seemed cheaper to go with the router.

If I have a windows 98 computer with 2 nics (I did get the Staples deal!!) how do I configure the Host machine to be the proxy?

thanks

you could just upgrade to win2k and use connection sharing, or use NAT network address translation, which is pretty much like a what a router/firewall does.
