Looking for free stuff in your local area... try Freecycle

ive went to that site a few times, they use should a better format though, the busy areas get hard to sort through with all the posts.

Most of the freecycle groups are on yahoo. For myself there are two free cycle yahoo groups in the area I live in. I got rid of an edger I didn't want a while back. Great way to clean out your garage and not send the stuff to the landfill.

Freecycle

This is working great in our area. I have received things I need and gotten rid of a lot that I did not need.

Yes, it's great. Until I find out that items are gone within 5 minutes.
Apparently there are greedy people setting their auto-reply message with "I want it" to just about every item, and only pick up the things they need (or can sell). Since most use first-come-first-serve method to give things away, the people who really need the item just doesn't get it. Some users have responded by more clever rule, though, such as the 5th response after 3pm wins, for example.

Freecycle -- LOTS of free used stuff (PCMag Top 100)

Honestly Im suprised that this has never shown up on here before, They were listed on 'PC Magazine's Top 100 sites you can't live without' ...

If you dont mind recieving lots of emails every day (NOT SPAM) this is a great service and you can get TONS of free used stuff ... bikes, kitchen appliances, furnature, cars, you name it. Basically you sign up for listservs near your area, and anyone who has something they want to give away, they post it, everyone on the list gets an email about this freebie, and its first come first serve (unless otherwise noted).

i) Before signing up, I strongly recomend creating an email account exclusively for this purpose as it will be receiving a LOT of email. I use yahoo, use whatever you like.

1) Go to http://www.freecycle.org/
2) Browse for the list nearest your geographic location (or sign up for as many as you want)
3) Give them your email address and wait for the offers to flood in.

Kind of a new twist for Spoofee members?

I have joined a free thing called www.freecycle.org which enables anyone across the country to "barter" or give away anything that someone else may want. It is free (so moderators no this is not spam or a sales pitch).
So if you want to give or get something while helping to reduce the landfill, try this website.

Thanks all. I know it's not the usual "free stuff" like we know it but in a way it is better.

This is through yahoo so you must have a yahoo account, also some areas have a few different groups (it will go by zip codes) and other areas don't, so they are added to another group. I have been a member of freecycle for a while now and in my area awesome things have been posted ie boats, cars, ect. Sign up and give it a try :-)

Freecycle is great! a lady in my area wanted to get rid of some of her garden stuff, so i helped to relieve her of a few pansy plants & plant seeds. People have offered free printers & other techie items, even a laptop (those get "taken" quite quickly).

=)

I agree that freecycle is pretty cool. I joined a few weeks ago to see what all I could snag since we are moving from an apartment to our first house and need a few things. The day after I joined, a lady posted self-propelled lawn mowers in need of repair. My husband can fix anything, so we picked up two mowers and he had one running after a days work, a good cleaning, and a .99 gasket! .99 for a mower is hard to beat!

Sounds like a too much work for me LOL :clown:

I have recieved 6,000.00 (used price) worth of stuff!

I'm really good at this. I live in Dallas and we have the largest in the world 15,000 members and we have a bunch of smaller groups as well. I have received since last OCT. about 6,000 dollars the used price of a item worth of goodies. I got a I Imac personal PC Blueberry with mouse +mouse pad, keyboard and all the new system software loaded on it, 250 music CD's, 50 VHS vidoes, 2 VCR's Large tool box of craftsmen tools, power drill, 50 stuffed animals to send to the troops, 3 game systems kept one, 25 play station games, clothes, craft items and a TONE more.

Here's how I do it to get what I want. It depends on your moderator but I've never had any problems. I went around the house and made a pile of things to get rid of. It doesn't matter if they are broken or not working people will take them. I listed them all seperatly even the clothes. Then at the bottom of the list I post "I ALSO HAVE A WISHING LIST" and list all the items I am looking for! Ta da! Got just about everything I wanted and then some!
FREECYCLE ROCKS!

Bump Up...Still a great Idea.
I joined my local Freecycle group after seeing these posts a few months ago , and would highly recommend it to anyone.
Check out http://www.freecycle.org/

I joined my local freecycle when it was first established. I love the idea of giving away items to less fortunate people, plus saving the land mines from unwanted items.

I have given away a few Items on my local free cycle group and received a couple of Items,
Just because I was up early this morning, I am going tomorrow to pick up a digital camera..
Anyone that has some garage sale left-overs should check it out

I am not sure if this is applicable in all areas or not, but here in Jax, there is a 24 hour period that the "offering person" has to wait till they decide. Then it gives everyone a chance, not just the ones with the auto reply. That was becoming a big thing here as well.

Excellent post! Thanks! I couldn't believe there was actually a group not far from me! :)
