Lookingfor a book that I read "when I was a kid..."

I figured I'd post this here, since Spoofee members appear to be a varied & well-read bunch.
:teeth:

Okay, so what I remember specifically:

* this kid would hide in a cabinet (broom closet? wardrobe?) when there would be an argument in his/her "real" world. The kid would then be transported to an earlier time.

* there were hash-marks in the cabinet/whatever. I think that only when the kid entered the cabinet on a corresponding hash-mark date, would the transport be possible.

* at one time, when in the earlier time period, the kid was being chased by someone & ran into the cabinet. The pounding on the cabinet door (by the person chasing the kid) fades into slight tapping, so when the kid emerges, the "tapping" is actually rain on the window.

* a bad person chases the kid (in the earlier time) -- the kid has a paper/document, which the kid crumples & hides in the mouth of a bear rug.

I'm hoping that someone will have an easy recollection of this title -- it's probably out of print...

Thanks in advance.

Hi, precocious.

Thanks for the response. Nope, "LW&W" ain't it: saw the movie (last year? Two years ago?) and knew that wasn't it.

:ohwell:

I'm just going to throw this out there, because it seems similar. The Indian in the Cupboard series maybe? In the first books, the boy is only turning small toys into tiny living humans. In later books he uses the same key he uses on the cupboard for a chest of some sort and he is transported back in time instead. Just a guess...

This would only work if you knew some good keywords to use, but you might try books.google.com. It will search book contents for your search phrase. This has helped me before. It sounds as if your memory of the book is fading though, so I'm not sure.

Hey, servantofone.

I don't recall every reading any of the "The Indian in the Cupboard" books, but that doesn't mean that I didn't read them; will check them out. Also will investigate the google site.

Thanks.
:)

I don't want you to have to date yourself, but it might help if you mentioned what decade you read it...

I know all the newberry award winners that I loved from when I was a kid are all now replaced with new ones for my kids' generation.

If I don't date myself, then who will???
:snark on myself:
;)

Okay, so it was probably mid-60's...

I'm coming up with nothing... I'm sorry!

Wait until BD comes to the rescue. He's the man. He can figure it out!

Burbankgal, did you ever find your book?

I was in a tourist-y kind of store in Maine today and saw a book from the (as mentioned earlier) Indian in the Cupboards series and in reading the back it sounded SO much like the book you are looking for!! It was NOT the Indian in the Cupboard but one from the Indian in the Cupboard series of books~I believe this one is the Mystery in the Cupboard by Tom Newsome.

Hope you have solved your mystery by now!!
:yesnod:

Hey, sweetwinter.

Thanks for keeping my search in mind!

Nope, haven't found the book; will have to look at the one you've mentioned.

Many moons ago, I posted this question on a message board and actually came up with the title! Unfortunately, this was back in my hotmail days, so after not logging-in to my hotmail acct. for however long, everything got wiped out. So now, I have to start over. Really is a bugger, too.

Okay, I'm at the Barnes & Noble site to look at the book. This can't be it = published in 1994. I read the book I'm looking for in the '60's.

Oh, well.
