I'm in the process of narrowing down choices for a low cost laptop, I found the following and would like any ideas or suggestions about them....

Circuit City for $549.00
http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Acer...sem/rpsm/oid/127596/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do

MicroCenter for $599.00 (they give you a $100.00 Rebate for opening a store credit card)
http://microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0188790

Well, what do you guys think? Anything else in the same price range that's better anywhere else....?

Thanks

If you have enough money for the Dell $750 deal, that's going to be the best quality computer around.

How about theDell Inspirion 1200 for $649 Reg. Price, then apply the 40% off code: 8NFJ8?5JRTSRWD ... This all can go through for only $390, but I'm not sure if the 40% off is for $999+ Purchases, anyone know?

dell would be good

there's also a toshiba laptop for $500 AR (free shipping) available at compusa

Toshiba Satellite A85-S107 Notebook, Intel Celeron M Processor 360J, 1.4GHz, 256MB RAM, 40GB Hard Drive, 15-inch XGA TFT Display, 8X DVD / 24X24X24 CD-RW Combo Drive, Windows XP Home Edition for $499.99 AR after $300.00 mail-in rebate(s)

http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=328883

battery life for this thing seems to be not so great, though

Thanks for the input on Dell Erik and Rockstar, but they end up coming up for a bit more money (and the coupon code for the 40% is only for Laptops over $999), I liked the the Toshiba but it only had 256 MB anyone know what it cost to upgrade that to 512 MB?

Well, you'd have to wait for a good deal.

I got one of my customers a Dell 6000 with a 1.6 processor, 512MB RAM, 60GB hard drive, DVDRW drive, built-in wireless, 15.4" screen. It cost $750 + tax and $19 ship.

i've seen stores sometimes run deals on 256MB of laptop RAM for ~ $20-$25 AR. don't see anything currently, but probably within a month there'll be an offer like that somewhere.

walmart has some cheap laptops http://www.walmart.com/catalog/prod...electedIndex=1&showAll=null&selected_items=na

In case you are considering an Acer laptop, make sure that you like the keyboard and design. In my openion, Acer should fire all the user interface engineers of travelmate.

acer is cheap because they make their products cheaply.

TRUST ME, it isn't worth the time and money you will put into it.

Go with what you need, just using it for school, work, to replace your home computer?

Don't talk to salespeople unless you know EXACTLY what you want. They will sell you crap you don't need.

On the 1200 model, it doesn't really matter. The deal that you found looks pretty good. Normally, the $750 off deals are good on the 6000, 9300, 700m etc. They don't discount the 1200 model much more than what's on the site.

I'm seriouly considering this offer from Dell... what do you guys think?

Should I wait for a better deal?

You should add a backup CD of windows, unless you have a licensed copy of windows already.

If you can help it, get M$ Office instead of wordperfect. More files are compatible with Office than with wordperfect, and you can create MDI files which are similar to PDF's.

Also, if you can, get more memory, or RAM. A good number is 512mb. 256 is ok, but its a pain in the ass if you want to have more than one program running at once.

Other than that, looks good, another 256 strip should only raise the price 50 to 100 (at the most) but hey all that is up to you.

Also, Gateway laptops are good(i hear) and currently I am using an HP (the new laptops are pretty nice and pretty low in price too)

Goodluck finding something.

i went with a dell 9300 with 40% off
i ended up with 1.6 Ghz, 256 ram, 60gb HD, Nvidia GeForce 256mb 6800, 8xCD/DVDRW drive, 9cell primary battery, and 1year warranty with dell nylon case for 1300 total after tax

gonna either buy ram from ebay for 25 or from newegg.com for 40shipped so i can match the ddr2 ram for dual channel

borrowed from FW, credit goes to fresh463

it looks like the same computer that's $499.99 AR at cusa this week, only for $50 less at BB starting sunday
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7266246&type=product&id=1117177233139
next week's BB AD.
Toshiba A85-S1072
Intel Celeron M processor 360 Notebook with DVD/CD-RW combo Drive (I didn't see speed on AD)
256MB DDR
40GB
Wireless G

$799.99 - $150 BB Rebate - $200 S1072 Rebate = $449.99

or get the 700M thru Spoofee's deal
http://www.spoofee.com/forums/showthread.php?p=77695#post77695

Well when you think of it, a better laptop from Dell with the 40% off coupon would make it $600, and when you consider that sometimes they don't charge tax, this is a much better deal, a $1000 laptop for only $600... Free shipping. "Handling" is $19... who charges that anymore?!

The Acer Aspire AS3003LCi Notebook PC looks like a good deal.

Don't know if you're still looking, but Woot has a deal you might be interested in today.
