So I was reading the reviews of the universal remote that BD posted the deal about. And I got to thinking... sorry again DanC... I wonder who's got a Mac and who's got a PC.

So...

Are you on a Mac (or iPhone or other Apple supported equipment) or a PC?

Also just wondering, where does a blackberry land? Is that PC related? or it's own breed?

I'm not sure how my post got you to this question, but I have a PC and if the Mac prices came down by 70% and the repair costs weren't so absurd, I'd probably get one. I know quite a few people that LOVE them. As far as media players, I personally don't care for iPods due to the iTunes interface and the fact that I usually don't care for super popular things for some reason. On the other hand, if my firm would pay for it (which they might now that the price has come down), I think I would get an iPhone once my 11 month contract ends next February. The apps and interface are pretty darn impressive and all the bugs should be out by then. I would however still keep my 120GB Zune for most of my music and media.

Blackberrys are closer to an iPhone competitor and although I loved my Blackberry years ago when I had one, as I mentioned, I would get an iPhone over a Blackberry Storm (or any Blackberry or probably any PDA) any day.

Hey tig!!!

HI BD :wavey:

I was reading some of the reviews of the Harmony remote to figure out what it did and why it was a "hot" item. One of the reviews had some jargon about it having Mac-OS stuff and how Mac users would feel more comfortable using it rather than PC users.

PC used to be the "it" thing. Of course, I'm married to a computer programmer who actually read the biography of the person who developed Linux so it's pretty geeky over here. Even education (at least the schools I worked for) has gone the way of PC, but that's just because they are cheaper to get. But a lot of my friends are starting to get Macs instead of PCs.

So I was just being inquisitive... that's been a trend around here lately.

We have been playing with Vortexes too. I put together a tornado contraption (just the water in the two 2L bottles...) for the kids, but hubby and I have been playing with it more than them.

Not a problem. I'm often inquisitive as well. BTW it sounds like lots of fun over there. :)

I have both Macs and PCs.
If I didn't NEED to have PCs to run the specialized software for my work, I'd only have Macs.
Yes, they cost more, but the time and money I save on not needing IT support (or figuring out how to fix some problem myself) far outweighs the price difference. As for hardware repairs, I haven't needed many, but they're priced competitively with a similar PC.
As for software, I can open and manipulate almost any file a common PC can produce.

Even though I use the hardware of the type that is called a "PC" I consider what I have as a Linux box and would not call it a PC because the immediate assumption is that a PC uses Windows. I could also run Linux on a Mac hardware computer if I cared to (and had one). I own an iPod (listen to it at least 2 hr a day) and install all my music from Linux using a program called gtkpod. I do cross platform in order to use iTunes but that is only to find all the free podcasts I like in one spot. I could get the podcasts from the various sites but it would be a little less convenient. Except for that I do everything I need with Linux and all Linux programs, in fact I am presently working on some building diagrams that if I used Windows or Mac would require Photoshop but I can do for free using Gimp (Windows version is available) and all things MS Office plus more can be done with Open Office (Windows version of that available) for free too. I appreciate that Bill Gates is doing wonderful things for the children of Africa with the money he makes but it is not where my philanthropic interests are so I'd rather not give him mine. Not too sure what Jobs does with his money but he doesn't need mine either.
My son just got an iPhone that he loves. I might have gotten the Palm Pre but I think the iPhone has the advantage of more applications available.

Usually get most of my stuff done on a PC, although I do some work on my Palm Treo 750w.

When i asked the IT repair guy (at the electronics store I used to work at) what would he buy a MAC or a PC he said "MAC".

"Why?" says I

"Because we never get them back for repair."

So - I bought a PC (go figure)

hubby is a mac man but we have both vcause when kids were her son had a pc which i use sometimes but boy it that thing sloooooooowwwwwww!!!!!!!

I guess I should also note I use Ubuntu Linux on my laptop and on one of my desktops. It took a bit of getting used to, but I sure like it!

If anyone cares, for those who don't known this (most I think) Ubuntu is a "distribution" of Linux of which there are hundreds. Distributions have to do with the look and feel and the software packages that automatically get installed. Some distributions are generally easier to install and update than others. One of the easiest ones to install (I'm told) is Ubuntu EXCEPT the "desktop" environment is "Gnome" which I am not comfortable with. I use PCLinux OS which I liked because it installed and everything simply worked AND it used the KDE desktop which is more like Windows. Ubuntu does have a variety called Kubuntu which uses the KDE desktop.

If interested this is the place to get any type of free OS you could possibly be interested in.

Many you download, burn a CD or DVD and then boot "live", meaning it runs off the CD. That way you can test drive without changing anything on your computer. If you like it you can install it as a dual-boot and if you love it you can get rid of Windows entirely. An especially good thing with live CDs is that you can fix Windows when it breaks using one of these. Linux can "see" Windows but Windows can't see Linux.

What I don't like about Linux is that there are too many choices of distribution and too much software.

What I don't like about Mac is that it's too easy to trash important operating files and it's too expensive.

What I don't like about Windows is that it breaks too easily and pretends it doesn't require a computer geek to fix it but it usually does, and it's too expensive.

I'd take too-many-choices, works, free and no more difficult to use than the others as my first-pick any time. Why pay for problems that they all have to one degree or another?

Jerry,
I've considered putting Linux on my laptop when I have some spare time (in about 10 years), but my hard drive isn't very big. Do you know about how much space I'd need?
Also, would I need to partition my hard drive to set up a dual boot?

Almost all of those posts were too complicated for me to read. I have a pc-a big box that plugs in, and a laptop-a smaller version that feels fancier. I have an ipod. I used to listen to it but when the program got wiped off my pc I haven't figured out how to get it back. Also could never figure out how to organize my songs into playlists. I'll have to wait until my boys get a little older I suppose.
