My windows 2000 prof cd key isint working when i try to reinstall it. It says incorrect key even though it is the one which is on the sticker on my comp. The microsoft site charges like 100$ for a support call. How do i get intouch with them withouth it :(

when my computer was broken, and wasn't able to be connected to the internet, I think i was registering my copy of XP Pro, and I called them and gave them my CD Key, and they gave me some number to enter into my Computer, i think he was some kind of Indian, and talked very fast, so listen carefully

Typical Tech Support response

Reboot and try again. That fixes everything.

Or do yourself a favor and just thank what ever bad line of code isn't liking your reg key and go install linux....it'd be cheaper and easier than trying to find an inteligent person at Microsoft that could actually help you with their problem.

did your computer come with windows 2000 pro? If not, the key on the side of the computer wont work. If so, did it come with the cd for 2000 pro or a restore disk? I know Dell sends the restore disk and you cant use the key for an actual cd.

Didn't know that, good info!

We don't know what kind of computer it is. Calling the computer manf might be a better idea.

I think its exactly the proble, it was a dell server machine pre loaded with win 2000 , now even though Micriosoft tells me the key works , dell says it wont work unless i have the restore disk so basically i am screwed.

Oh well , off to XP i guess :(

I see that you have several options...

1. Upgrade to a free OS

2. Downgrade to another Microsoft OS

3. If you feel you really have a legal copy of windows, but the software is being annoying and wont let you put in the legal code, go get a cracked liscense. That's not the best idea, cuz you can still get busted for the pooched liscense, but at least you get what your supposed to have...

4. Use a completely illeagal copy of windows, and move to France, because piracy is legal there.

Go over to the following site.

www.protonic.com

It is a free computer help service. I am a tech over there. Someone knowledgeable will help you. They have a good reputation and will stay with you 'til your problem is fixed.

Don't go in the forums section, go to the post a question section. Post your question on the board and wait for a tech to take it.

Do you have a solution maybe The Ring Wraithe?

Hey Dehawk,

I'm not sure if I should be posting this in a forum, I was debating if I should PM you , but oh well...

back in high schooll one of my comp. teachers gave each of us a cracked copy of Windows XP Prof. We all have the same cd key and it hasnt giving me any trouble. I've downloaded SP2 without any problems too. So if you need XP Prof. Ed. just let me know :)

Zip. :zip:

He also gave us a copy of Windows Server 2003 Win 2K, Visio, and a bunch of other stuff; but unfortunately I lost the paper that had all of those cd keys... yeah I know, it was a bad day.

Microsoft Makes them do it. They give them a much cheaper rate on the Licenses since they buy so many. So they are only valid for Dell's Restore disks. They were having problems with people buying the "cheap" computers and installing a pirated version of an OS on it or Linux and then the user would sell the real license.

You absolutely sure you are typing in the key correctly? You're not confusing the letters I and l , or the O and the number 0 ?

ANd is your keyboard actually typing in the key you press? I had this happen once. Typing the 4 produced an e and r. Cap lock off of course.

Go over to protonic where some expert who knows Win2000 intimately and has probably encountered your issue will pick up the question...

I'm pretty sure that almost all if not all of the Dell and Microsoft licenses are in all caps....but i dont think they are case sensative.

apparently its the case of only being able to use a restore disk with that key. Apparently after i install windown i can use a key changet to change they key but a winxp disk will not accept the key during an install. Microsoft confirmed that the key is genuine and of i needed any more hely they would charge me 250 :(.

Dell told me to finx the restore disk or pay 50 to get another one. I am seriously pissed.

Hmmm,

since both MS and Dell are refusing to help you to remain legal, I would at this point dl a warez copy of Win xP Corporate edition. I would have no qualms about doing this as neither company seems to want to lift a finger to assist a customer like you who has attempted to play fair. In fact they are attempting to victimize you (rape you) while you are down.

You want to search for the Corp version as it doesn't require activation. You only need a key. These are available all over the 'net, limewire, bittorrent. Any appz, warez, crackz site has these. And also get the key generator which is usually included as a separate dl.

There is also a version called "Win xP - Stripped to the Bone" which contains the barest minimum parts of the OS to get your computer up.
