I wish they would do a deal on a family pack of FULL installs. I hate dealing with upgrades, and everyone I talk to hates upgrades too.

btw great price, thanks for the deal!

Thanks ElectricPickle!

Next up is Amazon, I wonder what they'll offer =P

I believe you can do a clean install with the upgrade version of Windows 7, it just gives you the option of doing an upgrade instead. Right?

this is a deal?

you can get this at staple for $119 plus tax ...........what gives?

I've only installed Win7 as a new install - no experience with upgrades yet. It's my understanding that you can use an upgrade version to do a "clean" install (your only choice if upgrading from XP) but it has to be on the same drive or partition that the previous version resides on. It used to be that Microsoft would let you insert the original operating system disc and the installer would verify the upgrade qualification that way. I don't think Win7 works that way.

Nope, you cannot do a clean install with an upgrade version. You'll have to reinstall Vista or XP to install Windows 7.

As per Amazon: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Family Pack allows users to install Windows 7 Home Premium on up to three PCs in a household that already has Windows Vista or Windows XP installed. If you’re not running Windows XP or Windows Vista, you’ll need to purchase the Full version of Windows 7.

The only version of Windows 7 that was out, was the beta. The beta was the Ultimate, full version. Thus, allowing you do do a clean install or upgrade from previous Vista/XP.

Yes - in order to use Windows 7 Upgrade you must have either Windows XP or Windows Vista already installed. If you need to install to a "bare drive" then you need a full version of Windows 7.

No - A "Clean" install HAS to be done if you are upgrading from XP. A clean install is optional (but suggested) with Vista as your original OS. "Clean install" means that Windows 7 upgrade will erase your original OS and install a fresh and clean version of Windows 7. All of your previously installed programs will have to be reinstalled from the original discs/downloads.

Here's an upgrade trick that can be used for Windows XP to Windows 7.

Users on the web have found another way to ease the upgrade process. "Borrow" a copy of Vista and do an upgrade from XP to Vista and then onto Windows 7. You won’t even have to stop and validate Vista.

If you run the free MS w7 compatibility checker it shows you what path you have to take.

Though the price is okay.. why do we really have to go for an upgrade is the question I've in mind. Can somebody please answer this question?
Windows 7 is a much cleaner and nicer system to use. It is alot more stable than Vista and is slightly faster and less resource intensive.
